what a shame if terrapin winds up moving to South Carolina... The state of GA can't do a damn thing right, and losing what is supposedly an Athens staple will tarnish its reputation forever. Before you know it, creature comforts will follow suit if it gets bigger and bigger like Terrapin has over the years.

Give it time. Economic Development departments in GA have been doing good work lately.

I thought the Flagpole said it wasn't losing Terrapin, that it could have but the city stepped up to help the business expand on its current location?

ETA:
quote:

Cochran and Mayor Nancy Denson have signed a tentative agreement. And ACC’s fiscal 2016 budget, approved earlier this month, includes $350,000 for an unnamed economic development project that now appears to be Terrapin.

In exchange for ACC incentives, Terrapin has tentatively agreed to invest $12 million and create at least 25 jobs averaging at least a $30,000 salary over the next six years.

Sadly, you have to threaten to leave to get love in GA as an existing business.

Their cost of moving would be high. Don't be surprised if moving is an empty threat.

No inside knowledge just experience.

That's how I took it. Also have a loyal following in Athens and GA. No need to screw it up if the city is willing to pitch in to help you expand.

That's great news I hadn't read until now.

Also, how do you guys feel about Halfmoon relocating to Prince Ave?

As big as Terrapin is, they aren't as big as the distributor lobby in GA.

The issue is, in GA (and only two other states), a brewer can sell direct to the public OR be sold in stores. They can't do both. And to be sold in stores, you must go through a distributor. The brewer can't go direct to 5 points liquor store and make a deal. That have to go through a distributor by law.

Until that law is changed, Terrapin can only sell direct through "tours" with a flat fee for the "tour" that comes with a "free glass" that entitles you to a few "free samples".

It's the same way Creature Comforts operates.

It looks like ACC is subsidizing Terrapin to hang around a little bit longer, anticipating a state law change.

Terrapin is kind of overrated.

They have a solid beer selection but their venue is garbage relative to Creature Comforts. They need to pour some money into making the venue worth visiting;if I'm going to have to drive, DD, or take a cab out there, make it worth my while.

The direct to the public used to only apply to brewpubs for their product sold & consumed on-premise...

Pretty sure there is a new law either passed or soon to be passed that would allow breweries to sell pints not to exceed 72 ounces(6 bottles) to the public and up 144 ounces(in 12 oz bottles or cans), the equivalent of a 12-pack, to go. Brewpubs could also sell the same amount of packaged beer...

It's always been a fricked up deal in Ga. The GBWA & the Distilled Spirits lobby groups fought Sunday sales tooth & nail for the pkg. store owners & distributors so they didn't have to work/pay people to work an extra day but the Grocery/C-store lobby prevailed...

Ga is actually a 3 tier state for the big boys... You can either (1) brew, (2) transport product from the brewery to the wholesaler or (3) Sell & deliver product to on-premise/off-premise accounts as a distributor in a protected non-compete(for your products) area. Not 2 or all of the 3 ...

I.E. the Miller Brewery in Albany can't use their own trucks to ship beer to United Distributors in Smyrna or N.E. Sales & It's the same with A-B brewery in Cartersville with shipments to Atlanta Bev. or Eagle Rock...

FWIW... I worked in the industry for 25 years, I got out in '06...

Mostly just a better location. The beer is solid, and someone that doesn't prefer all the hops a lot of terrapin has may actually prefer creature comforts. But IMO terrapin is better beer.

As sodomites celebrate getting politicians to tax and meddle with their personal relationships.....
....and while white college-aged trust fund know-nothings wearing neck scarves spray paint "Black Lives Matter" on Confederate monuments......

The shite Monster......still walks the earth by night collecting terds.........then stacks them up in a pile in his cave...........and relaxes upon em.

Stay thirsty friends!

It's solid stuff. Athena and Tropicalia are on shelves now. I'd recommend trying both; both are winning awards hand over fist. The actual brewery itself has a lot more options, though. Overall, it's not on Terrapin's level yet but it holds its own as a brewery.

As for the location, it kicks the dogshit out of Terrapin and SBC by a wide margin.

Tropicalia is really damn good.

Terrapin has some really good IPAs, but I think Liquid Bliss is the best beer they make.
