When I was a kid, I always had an aquarium, I subscribed to magazines, I knew all the shite. But that was 20 years ago.

On Father's Day I filled a 55 gallon aquarium and put 13 neon tetras in it. I would have put 30 or 40 but it's all Petsmart had. I clean them out.

Today, maybe a month later, I have 8 remaining. 8 neon tetras in a 55 gallon tank need more friends. What are good friends for them to have?

Also, I need a hood light that is super cheap, recommendations?

Growing up my buddy's brothers had a tank and purchased a few piranhas to put in it. They ended up being about 5-6 lbs before they died. They were cool as shite. They'd eat anything you threw in there. I loved throwing mice in there for em. Those things are deadly accurate with their strikes.

I'm sure this doesn't help but I figured I'd share my story with you.

That doesn't surprise me AT ALL coming from you. I thought about replying to your question about gay marriage you asked that other guy but I figured I would let him be his own man

I'm taking this as a compliment.

Hope I'm right.

One oscar. Dogs of the fish world. Of course the tetra population will decline quickly.

I don't know who's response is actually the worst in this thread.

I'm very disappointed in all of you.

If you lost that many in that short of a time, either you have a problem with your water or the fish. That shouldn't happen.

When populating a tank, there are a couple of decisions you have to make.

Salt or fresh - you have chosen fresh.

Community or more aggressive - Tetras are community. The common others are the swordfish, mollies, barbs, catfish, etc. Discus are very cool, but need to be basically alone in the tank.

That is a big tank, you can put a lot of fish in it.

If you want to go on the more aggressive end as mentioned Oscars are pretty cool. They are kind of like a dog in that they recognize you and are actually excited to see you. They will eat some unusual things, like frogs, bugs, etc or about anything you chose to throw in there within reason.

Most aggressive tanks have a large population of cichlids which are from Africa and South America primarily. They exist well together, are very colorful and don't sit still for a minute. One decent bottom feeder, Red Tail Shark and you are set. They are a little pricey especially when compared to say a tetra (10x). Don't put tetras in there with cichlids or oscars, they will be simply lunch.

If it were me, I would go the oscar route or the cichlid route. They are just more interesting to me. I had a 55 with one oscar and he was sport. I had to put two bricks on the hood to keep him from jumping out. He would hit bait like a bass.

If you want to check a great sample of cichlids, go to a Cheddar's restaurant. They all have a 500 gallon tank full of them.

Good luck.

Well Deeprig you have to admit this is somewhat of an odd thread even by your standards.

Do you remember the lionfish in Bruce Lee's Game of Death movie? The fish seemed to thrive well in a fish tank and liked things that would "stick to its ribs" according to its handler. It might be a worthy and colorful addition. Just a thought.

FYI if you spear nine lion fish you can take an extra lobster this year during the annual mini lobster season starting later this month in the Florida Keys.

Sorry to hijack your thread butters.

Buy a pet rock. Easier to maintain and just as affectionate.

. Deeprig, I'm the same way, always had a tank as soon as I moved out for school. All through college I had fish/amphibians. I have a 20-30 and a 20 tank in my garage and I want to set them up for my 6 year old son. Thanks for the advice
