Are you a west coast ipa gal

Not sure what the difference is between the different IPAs. I have been to Russian River out in CA and tried their famous Pliny the Elder. It was good but not the world beater everyone makes it out to be.

My favorite beer right now is called Homestyle IPA out of Bearded Iris here in Nashville. All their stuff is good, really.

I think Westcoast is more piney. East coast is more citrus

Westside IPA is fiya if you like the piney

I think its relative. When Terrapin was the only real player in Athens they were the best, but now with breweries like CC and others popping up, they have taken a back seat IMO. Still good, but I dont opt for them unless its a new beer that i haven't had yet

Might be getting Elder and Younger confused. Elder is delicious, don't get me wrong... but it's also a beer they've been making since 2000. It's available year round. It's still an exceptional DIPA, it's just that the market has caught up and there are a shite ton of breweries doing really creative stuff now.

Pliny the Younger is their much more rare IPA offering, and even still it's been brewed since 2005 as the first Triple IPA offering (at least in the US that I'm aware of). Used to be really hard to even get in to try, though they adjusted their policies in the last few years to help with the 3 hour/3 younger limit.

Suffice it to say, the brewers at RRBC were pioneers in the craft beer space... it's not terribly surprising that 17+ years later there are newer breweries offering quality stuff now, but the fact that their beer still holds up as a top tier offering is pretty damn impressive.

I will also second though that Bearded Iris makes good beer. Had a couple of different ones at a get together a couple of weeks ago. Any chance you know if they're distributing to Georgia yet? Haven't seen them at my local beer spot.

It has nothing to do with the amount of breweries around. I'm not saying that Terrapin is the best brewery in the country. However they have some phenomenal beers. Hopzilla, Rye cubed, and Wake and Bake just to name a few.

And Creature Comforts is awesome, but people vastly overrate them due to Tropicalia. None of the rest of the beers have been that good. Koki Buni was pretty solid, and their new one, Modern Comforts maybe? Is a quality beer. However in overall quality, Terrapin is superior.

Could be, I'm no aficionado. They have a lot of good stuff, but for the amount of people in that place I would have though it would be life changing.

Not sure. They just started selling it at Whole Foods, restaurants, and various other places here, so I imagine out of state distribution is probably a ways off.

So yes, you are a west coast ipa girl. Thats why you don't like terrapin. Other than hopsecutioner, they don't do the big ipa's that you enjoy.

Right now Im enjoying a cold crisp Sound Czech from terrapin. On tap at blind pig down town. Traditional Czech pilsner, what budweiser would have tasted like 100 years ago.

You all should get downtown and have a couple pints of this a blind pig.

I greatly prefer Creature Comforts to Terrapin, but beer opinions are like assholes. Wake and Bake and Big Hoppy Monster from Terrapin are fantastic and their Rye Pale Ale is a tried and true staple. I liked last years Mosaic Red IPA too, but I don't find any of their regular IPA's to be that good. Hopsecutioner and Hi-Five are pretty meh and unless it is the only thing on tap I'm never going to be ordering either. Their Hi-10 was one of the worst beers I've ever had in my entire life. Again, different strokes, so I get it if people prefer Terrapin because they do have some really good limited releases and the Rye Pale Ale really is a solid everyday beer.

Then Creature Comforts comes along with Tropicalia which rightfully deserves all of the praise it gets. If I was stuck with only one beer the rest of my life, it would definitely get some consideration. Their Koko Buni is phenomenal and I'm ready to horde a ton of Cosmik Debris when it gets released in the next few days (i think). 3 of my favorite beers all from one hometown location.

Not sure how much will make it's way to Atlanta, are you in Athens? If so, any chance one could beg/barter/murder for you to get a bottle or 2?

Sound Czech

This might be one of the best non-limited beers Terrapin has put out. It's subtle and delicious, and I say that as someone who generally dislikes most pilsners. It's very similar to Budvar if you ever go to Prague... as you said, it's Budweiser before someone decided to replace it with 90% horse piss.

It comes in 4 packs and last year they were nearly impossible to get even around Athens but there is one particular liquor store everyone seems to forget about that manages to keep a decent inventory of the special releases.

if I can snag a couple of 4 packs (usually its a 1 per customer limit) then we can talk

PS good call on the Sound Czech, I forgot about that one. Dangerously drinkable.

Gotcha. Couldn't remember if it was cans or bomber bottles. Makes sense, since the only bottles of CC that I recall now off the top of my head were from the Curious series. Will be on the lookout here in ATL as well, but if you manage to get more than 1 keep me posted I guess.

FYI: Here was the official release announcement:

quote:

We will have the beer available on draft in the Tasting Room on March 21st with kegs going out into the Athens and Atlanta markets following soon after that. Cans will be available as souvenirs on March 30th in the Tasting Room and will be available in Atlanta and Athens markets soon after.

I had forgotten that I have a friend of a friend who works in commercial sales for them, so might hit him up to figure out who is getting larger shipments in Atlanta. Maybe he can help a brotha out.

Impossible to find in cans but was everywhere on draft. Mellow Mushroom in Athens had it for months.
