Maybe its time for a new thread. I'll be visiting the dr with my Mom and Dad this week. What are some good questions I should be asking him? Thanks to all of you for your time and help!

1 Has it spread to any other organs?
2 Is there a chance for surgery? (the absolute best treatment if possible)
3 What are the side effects of her chemotherapy?
4 What is he going to do to manage those side effects and her pain.

Write down your questions and then his answers. Under stress people tend to forget.

5 How much experience does he/she have in treating her specific type of cancer?
6 Would he do the same treatment if it were his Mom?

The first and perhaps most important question is to you -

Where is she being treated?

If it is not in a clinic that specializes in cancer and only cancer you may have an issue.

8 - Is this cancer something that can be treated with Tarceva (Erlotinib)?
9 - If so, is there a newer drug with similar or better success?
10 - If not, are there other drugs that have a comparable mechanism?

She was just released from Memorial in Savannah. I have told my Dad that she needs to at least go the one in Jax, if not others.

Are there any ongoing clinical trials that have shown success and would she be a candidate?

For an internet sports forum, you are getting some damn good questions.

Looks like you're covered pretty well on general cancer patient questions.

Here are a few specifically related to your situation with Pancreatic Cancer

How far along is the cancer?
Honestly, its not good news with your Mom's jaundice.
It USUALLY means the cancer is in an advanced stage
but I hope to God I'm wrong. You'll have to get some
clarification from the oncologist.

Have they done the procedure to relieve the bile blockage? If not, find out if they plan on using a plastic (temporary stint) or a titanium/metal (permanent stint)

Sometimes they leave this decision to the family and its not an easy one.A permanent stint leaves you with little options down the road for surgery while a temporary one can come displaced and casue complications.

Pretty sure nothing can be done as far as treating the cancer until the blockage situation has been cleared up.

Good luck and I hope I'm wrong in regards to how far along the cancer has advanced.

I agree. And I thank each and every one of you. This is very hard for me as it is coming on the heels of my divorce, which really did a number on me to begin with.

Thank you all again.

Keep in mind my friend that cancer chemo and radiation treatments are HUGE profit centers for hospitals and treatment clinics and they will inevitably recommend these treatments even when they cannot prolong life more than a few weeks or months and it will make quality of life bad at best.
Do not trust anything a doctor says that sounds the least bit questionable. Get a second and third opinion! Healthcare these days is a one size fits all business and we are not all the same. Question, question, question. I didn't and regret not challenging our doctors more than I did.
Good luck.

Sorry to hear it spiff.

I would ask the doc if he's ok with you audio recording the conversation. It's hard to remember all the stuff they say.

Yes, but I forgot to ask if it was a temp or perm stint.

More than likely they put in a temporary stint.Pretty much SOP.

Ask the GI or whichever Dr you talk to how long they think it will last AND what happens if it comes dislodged.Try to nail them on this a get a solid answer which they probably won't give.
