Wall of text warning.

The Hawks are becoming a mess. Last night Dennis Schröder got benched by Budenholzer for spending an entire defensive possession arguing with Dwight Howard as the Warriors lined up a wide open three in a tight game.

A team that went 60-22 and made the ECF just 2 seasons ago is now just 5 games above .500 and arguably the most inconsistent team in the conference. Why? Because they forgot who they were.

They were a team built on consistency, offensive flexibility and a Patriots-style "Do Your Job" mentality. Then they slowly destroyed all of that for "star power" and dunks.

First they let Demarre Carroll go. Fair enough, it sucked, but we couldn't afford what Toronto was offering and Millsap was a more important piece to that puzzle. Relatively fine with that.

Then things got head-scratching. They traded away Jeff Teague, let Al Horford walk in lieu of Dwight Howard and shipped off Kyle Korver to the very team they were trying to beat, Cleveland.

Their identity is gone. Now, I'm left to wonder how much longer Budenholzer can maintain control of this bunch.

Attention Falcons: keep the identity that got you where you got. Don't overreact to one playoff moment. Don't blow things up because you lost the big game. Winners do what they do, and losers get sweaty palms and run at the first sign of trouble.

Rant over.

We were on our way to being the Spurs of the east before we made the stupid decision to fire Danny Ferry. What could've been.

They have enough to learn from their 24 point choke job. Let's not overload their plates.

Exactly. Handing all the keys to a 1st time head coach and then making him a first time GM is not too wise.

The Hawks have receded to their normal position in what I call "NBA Limbo". Good enough to squeak into the playoffs with a first round exit and not bad enough to get to the lotto and get a difference maker.

The way you break through that is with an adroit GM which Ferry was well on his way in doing. We have regressed every year in all aspects since his departure.

At least the Falcons have Quinn who looks to be the rudder for the rudderless dimitroff. The draft picks have improved immeasurably since Quinn's arrival.

And also because they probably knew they wouldn't beat the Cavs for the next several years. That 60-22 team got swept with homecourt advantage and only one of the games was close. That was a banged up Cavs team.

They tore it down, now let's see if they can get some young assets who will be ready to compete when LeBron starts declining.

I could see this is we hadn't given Millsap and Howard monster contracts. Why not forget Howard and give that same money to Horford and maintain an identity that you spent 3 years building?

We're not getting a top 10 draft pick and we have no cap space. Where's our flexibility or options there?

I'm kind of surprised they didn't deal Millsap when they had the chance

did not understand or agree with this move...Schroder was ON FIRE in the first half of that game against GS...he had Curry all kind of frustrated...and was taking it to the Warriors...I know he is young...but disciplining him in a big game like that is counterproductive...I too was yelling at Howard through my TV...GO GET THE REBOUND big guy!...that's your job...

should have left Dennis in the game..instead lost a nice lead they held all the way through the first half

That's fine because you're a fan, but when the best 3-point shooting team in history is inbounding the ball, you might wanna squash that for a second and play defense.

That's a WAAAYYY bigger problem than any rebound Howard didn't grab. Kid needs to get his head out of his arse.

The biggest problem with the Hawks is their ownership. The same can be said of the Braves.

Thats because Horford was a greedy SOB, and the identity he gave us was weak AF on the boards. Howard was the backup plan.

Horford's making a whopping $5 million per year more than Howard. Btw, we had Bird Rights on him, so we could have made our FA moves and then given him as much as we wanted.

Also, we wouldn't have had to pay him as much as Boston was paying him if we hadn't signed Howard. He was very vocal that he wanted to come back to Atlanta. We signed Howard to send the message that Horford was being shitcanned and then offered the big $$ after we already knew he was pissed and leaving. Same PR shite Riley did with Wade in Miami.

Yeah, we're falling further and further back in the East every day, but boy, we've got some REBOUNDS BABY!!!!!!

If Al really wanted to be in ATL, he would be in ATL as the hawks gave him a very wealthy offer, but he split over a small fraction of $. He simply refused the hometeam discount. We essentially chose Milsap over Al, which was the right choice. The howard for horford swap has been a wash IMO.

As for the falling back you speak of, our 2017 record is nearly identical to the 2016 record at this same point in the season. The dropoff at PG is playing the biggest role in our decreased scoring differential imo. That Teague/Dennis combo was among the best in the NBA.

It's not Howard's job to coach the team up. The dude is an elite rebounder which is exactly what killed us in the playoffs against Cleveland. Tristan Thomson should send al horford a thank you note for his big extension. Between pero and horford I got sick of seeing our C jacking up 3s and not hitting the boards. Howard isn't the problem. They shouldn't have traded Teague nor should they have given basemore that stupid contract. They are making hardaway jr the next overpaid guy right now behind Carroll and baze.

Not a word of this is true. Not one.

We signed Howard quickly and low-balled Horford before offering him a bigger contract at the last second to save face and make people like you think Horford refused to play for Atlanta.

Let me ask you this. If Matt Ryan was a free agent and the Falcons signed Phillip Rivers before even extending him an offer, what are the odds he would come back regardless of how much he was offered?

And if you don't think this team is worse this year, you haven't watched them play much. They damn near lost to Brooklyn at home tonight.

This is the real problem though. Budenholzer is an outstanding coach, but a terrible GM. The organization needs to step in and hire a real GM to take that role. Doesn't even need to be Ferry, just not Bud anymore.

That and Cleveland hitting 46 threes in games 2-3 combined. There's never been a two game shooting stretch like that before in league history. When a team that good is shooting that well, there isn't a whole lot you can do about it.

Well, you arent calling me a liar, but rather legit NBA insiders:

1. "Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical brings further detail, including the fact that the Hawks and Horford were separated in terms of financial commitment by only $6 million total over five seasons."

LINK

2. The Hawks were juggling a lot of balls in those frantic moments before Horford bolted to Boston. They had already agreed to a three-year, $70 million deal with Dwight Howard, a decidedly un-Hawks-like player who mans the same position as Horford. They were working to re-sign Horford anyway, and arranging a trade that would jettison Paul Millsap -- their best player last season.

Lets see your links proving otherwise.
