Posted on OT board but figured my UGA brethren may have some comments to add here:

Christmas present from the Missus is an offer to buy me a gun. Thinking either a 9mm or a 1911 .45. I've shot a few 9's that I liked but buddy had a 1911 that I really liked the feel and was incredibly accurate with. Any recommendations on models to take a look at or pros/cons of 9mm v. 45ACP?

Obviously cost of ammo leans heavily in the favor of the 9mm, and in order to be proficient with either, it's going to take a good number of rounds through either at the range.

Overall goal would be home defense as I'll never be a Range warrior, but will definitely put in the requisite time to stay proficient with it.

Would be kept at house 90% of the time. I generally don't frequent areas that I would need to CC. Ok with a little more bulk in those rare times that I need to carry.

Kimber makes a really sweet 1911. Not a huge fan of the 9mm but maybe someone else can recommend one.

I love my S&W 9MM. Easy to control and strikes the fear of god in that unlucky fella who enters your dark home in the middle of the night.

I love 1911's but I wouldn't go for one for a home defense gun. They are sometimes finnicky and have low magizine compacity. If you are looking for a home defense handgun I would go with a Glock. They aren't always sexy but they point, they shoot, and they do it with deadly accuracy. They are simple to clean, care for, and to clear malfunctions.

As far as 9mm vs .45 cal, I personally like 9mm more. The introduction of various types of personal protection ammunition for 9mm has really closed the gap on effectiveness significantly over time. It is also generally easier to find, cheaper, and can be just as deadly.

Just my two cents! Good luck man!!

They have a factory rebate also, usually clips and a range bag or sometimes a hat.

Like at church, the movies, a Christmas party, QT to pick up a 12 pk, Walmart to get stocking stuffers?? Unfortunately nowadays its the places you feel like you wouldn't need to CC that are the places you definitely need to. You never know when it will be needed. If that unfortunate event ever did arise that you needed it I'm positive you'd rather deal with a little discomfort of having it, than living with "what if's".

With that said if you're looking for a 1911 go with .45 if you want a 9 I'd go with something double stacked. I love my G19.

For home defense nothings beats the shotty, I have a Mossburg 500 with the pistol grip. Get yourself some home defense rounds. your intruder will wish he picked a different house.

Definitely 9MM. Plenty of stopping power and easier to control. For protection load it with a "birdshot" she'll in first position followed by kill bullets if needed.

Glock 26 for carry; Glock 19 if not.

Not flashy. Just work.

My husband got me a S&W .38 Special and use hollow points. Heavier bullet with more power and lighter weight gun than a 9mm. Of course you are limited to 5 shots but for home defense you shouldn't need more than that. And no worry about jamming which can happen with a clip with hollow points. He has a Browning 9mm and it jams when he uses hollow points.

Why don't you like 9mm? Can hold more capacity, and depending on what type of rounds you use can be very effective.

S&W 9MM

Shot a couple of these at the range and liked the sights. Felt like it was a really natural gun to point and shoot. Didn't love the build of the one I tried out... polymer felt kind of cheap and almost too light? Will definitely try again though to see if it grows on me.

Thanks for the input. Will definitely do some more research but good to get opinions from gun owners. Had not heard that about the 1911 overall, other than the mag capacity being lower of course. I live only a few miles away from Marietta so not opposed to Glock, but my one hesitation there is the lack of a true "safety". I don't personally have an issue with it, but will want the Missus to learn how to fire it as well and I'm not sure how I feel about her handling a gun without one.

Also good to hear the opinion on 9mm defense ammo vs. 45 in terms of stopping power.

That is a gun I need to get out and shoot. I've heard great things about the series.

I wondered how long it would take to get to "magazines".
