OT - Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge

Since we're on phone services, has anyone here already upgraded to the S6 or S6 Edge? What do you think? Any reason to pick one over the other?
I'm personally looking at ordering the 128GB S6 (not Edge) so that I can get a Lifeproof case for it. The Edge may not ever get a Lifeproof made as they say they have no plans to produce one at this time.
I considered going the cheaper route for the S5 since it has the removable battery and expandable memory, but then I read about one of the few big differences being the camera quality and that is a HUGE deal to me since my phone serves as our primary camera (and we're about to go on vacay in two weeks).
So who's got either of these and what's the verdict?

I would consider waiting a month or two to see if they release an S6 Active. Not having a micro SD slot is a deal breaker for me and there are rumors the Active will have one. The S6 is a great phone if you don't care about that. Probably the best phone you can buy right now.

Why? Did you go from iPhone to Samsung?

I have one. It's shite.

And I have had an S3 and S4, both of which were superior to their Iphone counterparts (and both still take decidedly better pics than the Iphone 6).

My uncle who worked for Verizon at the time said I should switch because it's cheaper and he really likes his. Now I've had it for a while and it drives me crazy. Not very user friendly IMO.

Anything in particular that doesn't function as well as on iPhone?

Just little things like the keyboard keeps malfunctioning on me, the fingerprint lock never works, constantly closing out of apps randomly among other little things. Not that the iPhone never does these things, I just prefer it's design and the overall product better as a whole.

This is pretty much true of everything that isn't a Blackberry with a physical keyboard. But Swype on the Galaxies can be super useful if you learn to use it.

Known issue on the S5, but apparently not a problem on the S6.

I've never experienced that. I have had that happen with my Iphone. That and lag when doing various things between apps.

I have no experience with the S6 but I hae a Note 4 and they aren't terribly different, spec wise. I handled the Note Edge and didn't like it. A couple of small things I'm not a fan of:
There is a little lag. I have a Note 2 sitting around that's rooted and on an AOSP ROM and it's faster than the Note 4 out of the box. People have the same complaints with the S6.
I put a Lifeproof Nuud on it and it lasted all of 35 seconds. It's way to big with it on. The S6 with a Lifeproof isn't much smaller.
The fingerprint scanner is very functional. Unfortunately, when it doesn't work - say it's wet because you're in a kayak - you have to use a password and it won't let you put a numeric only password. Not a big deal but it would be nice to just use a PIN.
The camera is supposed to be a big jump from the S5 but I don't see much of a difference. Lots of people claim to but I can't. Most pics from a camera phone come down to lighting regardless of the phone so it's kind of a moot point.
The lack of SD card slot and removal battery would have been a deal breaker for me in the past but Android has come a long way and I haven't had a Galaxy phone that required a battery pull since the Fascinate and 128GB is more space than you'll ever need on a phone.
tl:dr - Get the non-Edge S6.

Get a Google Nexus 6,you get the updates first! Were all other phones you have to wait until the phone service provider has to put their crappy stuff on the phone and take up space and on top of that the phone maker put's their operating system skin on top of Google's lollipop system.

And I am on lollipop 5.1.1 to,were all other manufacturers are now just releasing 5.0.1

I'm waiting to see it. I have a friend with an iPhone 6 with a Lifeproof on and it's MUCH thinner than the old ones used to be. I'm hopeful.

Supposedly the one on the S6 line was tweaked and according to all reviews I've seen, it is markedly better. I agree about the PIN thing, tho.

Largely true, but I have had the chance to compare pics from both side-by-side on a larger screen and the difference is noticeable. This is especially true on low-light shots. The S6 has the Sony IMX240 F1.9 sensor which is most definitely an improvement over the S5's Samsung ISOCELL F2.2 sensor. The S6 also has optical image stabilization.

I wonder if it'll work in a wet case, that's pretty much the only time my Note 4 won't.

The prints I get of my son from my Note 4 and the prints from his Mom's S4 are almost identical if the lighting was good. If it's low light....well the S4 isn't so hot. How much better is the sensor in the S6 than the one in the Note 4?
Posted on 6/5/15 at 12:58 pm to SneakyWaff1es
This might help. Looks like the Note 4 and S5 share the same sensor except the Note has OIS whereas the S5 has DIS.
quote:
When it comes to low light we pit the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 against the Samsung Galaxy S5. Both have 16MP ISOCELL cameras with identical f/2.2 apertures so the amount of light hitting the sensor should be about the same. The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 has the added bonus of optical image stabilization, which should allow it to snap photos at lower shutter speeds than the S5.

Sneaky,
Check this out.... S6 vs N4
Of particular interest, check out the 2:39 and 5:15 marks. Very good examples of differences in video and still quality between the two. I'm sure there are others in the video, but those two stuck out in the limited amount I could view at work.

My work connection blows and my phone stays in the drawer but I'll check it out when I leave. I'm thinking about getting my old lady the S6.

I actually use the S-Pen...besides I don't want her getting used to something big in her hand.
