....but y'all do realize that had we applied the same expectations to Vince Dooley that we do to Richt, we'd have never seen 1980 happen. His first 14 years were abysmal, save a couple of one loss campaigns.
Just throwing it out there.

This isn't the 70 ' s or 80's. We need winning and we need it now. It can be done. A lot of first year coaches have made the natty. There's no excuses.

Any coach with HW would've had similar results 80-83 as VD.

Yep, this is a key point. The college football landscape has changed a lot since the Dooley years. The state of Georgia has some of the best recruits in the nation and a great coach at UGA would be able to win championships.

Richt is the best coach UGA has ever had. Either UGA is historically horrendous at picking coaches, or there are larger flaws in how the program is managed at the administrative/BOR level.
Which seems more likely?

Whats most likely is we hired an ACC assistant 14 yrs ago and have been more patient than Job for it to pay off

Yeah, I'm thinking this one went right over your head, my friend.

A "lot"? As in....? Gus (nevermind the tremendous amount of luck it took for that to happen)?

So I guess you're in the "UGA is historically horrendous at hiring coaches" camp, because despite this, Richt is the most successful coach UGA has had without Herschel Walker

Kelly at ND..No doubt richt would have shite the bed at least once even against nd ' s schedule...oregon will be in the playoffs this year with a second year coach too

Nah, not exactly. I'm just saying that Dooley was averaging about 6 or 7 wins a year in his first 14. We (for whatever reason....I guess because expectations were clearly different back then) stuck with him in spite of his horrible record and, eventually, we got 1980. By today's standards, Dooley would have been fired after year 3.
That said, I believe that if many got their wish and CMR were ousted, UGA would go no further than hiring another promising, but otherwise unproven, coordinator from another team. The admin won't shell out the money for any of the guys we would want (and that's even assuming any of them would have an interest in the job).

If you are the AD do you fire Richt and risk getting canned if the new hire doesn't work out or do you retain the reliably mediocre Richt and keep your job? I believe Foley is a tremendous AD for UF, but if this next hire implodes then I suspect even he will be gone.

Right. At first glance, it seems like UGA has only had mediocre coaches in its entire post-WWII football history. One would think they'd get it right at least once. Either that, or the program is administered in such a way that mediocre results are to be expected, regardless of the coach.

Kelly at ND.
Kelly was 8-5 in both of his first two years and utterly pounded when he made it to the natty in year three....by a Bama team we were 5 yards from beating.

Richt wouldn't make the natty at ND. He's not aggressive enough and would have shite the bed.

Nah. Keeping results the same, Dooley would've just won the SEC in his third season (1966) and pounded SMU in the Cotton Bowl. He had just resurrected Georgia from the abyss of the early 1960's. The opposition at the time was pretty good too, with the winningest coaches in program histories at Auburn, Ole Miss, LSU, and Georgia Tech, and the winningest coach in SEC history at Alabama. Ray Graves was pretty good at Florida too.
I get that everybody is all sh*tty britches today, and also that it's fun to poo poo VD and all he did, but going full tard AND telling lies is something different.
Dooley was a very similar coach to Richt. He got the reins of an SEC program when it was probably a little too big for him, won early with some talented teams of upperclassmen, had to grow into the job, and found an uncanny knack for pulling a good season out of his a** to save his job.
1969 and '70 were pretty bad. 1971 was an 11 win campaign. '74 was the low point of his tenure, but he won an SECC and played for the natty in '76. 1978 was a decent season, and then the early '80's cemented his status as Mr. UGA Football.
Richt is following the same path.

Smelvis, you're missing the angle here, too (sort of). I'm in no way "poo-pooping" Dooley. I'm actually doing quite the opposite. I'm just saying if we were as quick to want a guy fired then as we are now....well, you know. Richt resurrected the program, too. And he's been close to the natty in a time where there's a lot more parity in the game between teams.
That said, something definitely needs to change. I just don't know what, exactly, that is.
