I wonder if it might of actually helped us more long term if Saban had stayed stubborn on this. Recruiting wise and such. He was getting crushed on all fronts.
Either way, its comforting to see Kirby isn't afraid of standing up to his mentor.

Maurice Smith and his mom have my respect. They stood firm and made Nicky back down like a little punk.

PR nightmare for Saban...even Bama isn't immune from all the bad press.

I personally hate the fact that graduate students can just go play somewhere else. Why should Smith or for that matter Lambert be able to just go play for another school?

Why shouldn't they have the right to play for another after they've fulfilled their obligation amd graduated?
Schools don't own these guys.

How quick can he move up our depth chart? Heard he was great on special teams too

I don't hate the fact that they can't transfer but it worries me that poaching may start being an issue. I can see both sides of the story here.

Its not poaching when the player wanted to come here.
Plus he's a graduate transfer, he basically earned the right to play his last year of football where he wants. That's the way it should be.

Why should anyone we limit where graduate students play if they have eligibility left?

The kid played three years of football and earned his degree. Seems to be a good kid and an good athlete. Why not try to maximize your last year of eligibility/ chance and get the most playing time and exposure you can...wether it's just for personal reasons (memories) or trying to get to the next level. Most kids want to bail after three years for the draft and end up not making it.

Just to play devils advocate - people sign non competes every day. I brought you in, trained you, gave you the opportunity to get your degree, a couple of rings - you take full advantage of this and accelerate your education - and for your last year of eligibility you jump ship and go to a competitor?
That being said I'm thrilled if this pans out. Also, the fact that Saban will process you at any moment makes it hard for him to play the loyalty card (actually he'd be laughed out of the stadium).
