Looking to get a new 12 gauge shotgun and would love to hear some of the advice of you crazy bastards. Mainly I will be carrying it with me to work everyday in the summer (out in the peanut and cotton fields) and would primarily be used for taking out animals I encounter i.e. snakes and armadillos. Just starting out looking right now and would love to know what brands you guys recommend or prefer, also things like pump action or semi auto, what stores (online mainly) are the most reliable and where to look for some decent deals. Now I will hit submit and pray this doesn't turn into a 2nd amendment/ gun control debate

870 can't begin to tell you how many things have died due to mine. I've got several Mossbergs some for plinking one strictly for turkey. But my go to is my 870

I'd go with a Mossberg. I've got an M590A1 for home defense. Might be a little overkill for small game.

If you're looking for a pump action to toss in the truck then the Mossberg 500 is the way to go.

Its not the prettiest but it is reliable and tough.

Duck, turkey, even deer hunting with slugs... I would say a remington 870

I put the same thread on the OB about a good pump, debate between a Remington 870 pump and a Benelli Nova pump. The overwhelming majority picked the Remington 870. I am getting ones soon. Great price and tough as Jarvis Jones!

I've definitely been looking at mossbergs, very very good brand, I even thought about deer hunting with whatever shotgun I get and I know a Mossberg will get the job done.

How much are you wanting to spend? And as far as who to buy one from the only answer is Barrow in Butler its not a far drive from you and they are great people. My best friend runs a archery / gun shop. He purchased an 870 a few years ago from them because it was cheaper than his cost. I always stop by when I'm at the farm.

Price wise, I'd rather not break the bank, but I know it's gonna be hard to find guns for low prices. We bought an AR-15 a few weeks ago and that joker was expensive, ammo is ridiculous too. All that being said, Dad said he would split the price with me if it is above 4 or 500, so not much more than that maybe, but whatever it takes to get something of good quality I'll buy, within reason of course.. I'm just looking for something that is light and easy to carry(if I end up taking it with me in the fields, it's a shite ton of walking, plus I also have to carry a bunch of other shite to measure and write on) and maybe something I'd hunt with. I will definitely check that place out in Butler, not a bad drive at all.

Can't go wrong with either one, honestly. That said, I'm probably going to get an 870. You can get a Mossberg 500 for about $350 around Athens.

And take the Yelp reviews of Barrow for what it's worth.

I was given my Remington 1100 when I was 11 and for the last 17+ years it has been my go-to gun. Never had a problem with jamming or anything else, it's been steady Eddie. I would highly recommend it.

Barrow has any kind of gun you can imagine. I've bought several firearms from there and always pleased with my purchase when I leave. You can also get Spankys Outdoors over there in Americus to order guns and he has fair prices without the drive.

I don't think Spanky actually keeps a large inventory. he does trade ins and a lot of gun orders. His website is southgagunsales.com. He does a ton of sales in the Americus area though.

I recently bought an 870 in a 20 gauge that shoots 2 3/4 or 3". Wanted the 20 to have something lighter to carry around and shoot birds. Gonna bust a turkey with it pretty soon hopefully. Really nice, dependable gun and have a lot of fun with it.
