Last dominant d-lineman

When was the last time we had a truly dominant d-lineman? Someone that could just control the line of scrimmage.

maybe Pollack-no one just jumps out right now. He was very good but not dominant. He had a good motor on every play

Pollack would be my choice. He got double teamed alot and still made plays.

Not dominant?WTF? 3 time AA,3 time All SEC,2004 SEC POY,2004 SEC defensive POY,Hendricks,Lombardi and Lott winner. Name a UGA DL thats been more dominant?

Quentin Moses, charles Johnson, and Marcus Howard (in 2007 at least)

This is not a rag on Rodney Garner, but it does seem that our d-linemen have flourished in the pros more so than at GA.
Is it that he has good talent and prepares them well for the pros OR is it that he has good talent and doesn't get the best out of them?
Geno Atkins? Richard Seymour? Deangelo Tyson? et al
I'm refering to the DLs that he coached, not DEs.

Actually it is a valid relative to Garner's DL coaching.
Honestly I would not be surprised to see some improvement in DL play over time in spite of losing our starting OL. And really I can't remember a truly dominant OL. Pollack was a LB which I don't consider part of the DL. With the 3-4 defense, the DL just includes the NG and the 2 DE's.This post was edited on 3/2/13 at 10:16 am

Quentin Moses, in my opinion, was only good bc Pollack was always taking double teams. The year after Pollack went pro Q-Mo was a bit of a disappointment. I for one have thought for a long time that Garner didnt always get the best out of the linemen that we had bc they always seemed to do better in the pros. We will see though.

Pollack was LB? @ UGA? WTF are you talking about? He won the Hendricks award...it goes to the best DE in CFB.

I think he may have just been referencing the fact that we were talking about the development of the players in the pros vs at uga and the fact that Pollack played olb in the pros.

I stand corrected. Pollack played LB in the NFL and was an undersized DE for UGA. My apologies for my stupidity but I guess I always thought of Pollack as a LB due to his size. Regardless, he was one of the best players on defense for Georgia for all time and a DGD. He would have made one hellava LB in the 3-4 defense.

I don't think it's fair to blame Garner for the success those players had in the NFL vs at UGA, although it does feel good.
In the NFL, your full time job, year round, is working out and practicing. In college, you have to take classes and stuff, and practice is limited to so many hours during the week. Some guys just need that little bit of extra time to hit the next level of production.
Also, linemen don't necessarily start for 4 years with a chance to develop fully in college. As freshman, they are usually in a backup roll, same as sophs. If they have a breakout year as juniors, alot of them take chances in the draft right away, few stay to get better for their senior year.
It's only natural that your best guys are going to get better on the NFL level. It's just a numbers game.

I thought Geathers was pretty damn dominant. In a 3-4, dominant doesn't mean you are getting to the quarterback on every play, it means you are tiring out and wearing down the OL so Jarvis Jones can get to the quarterback.

How much of Geathers' play did you actually watch last year, how many games did you go to? In what games did you see Geathers get pushed around like a cheap lawnmower?

I was just strictly speaking of control and disruption of the o-line. As far as Garner goes I just havent really been happy with the d-line for awhile and since he was the position coach put alot of that on him. But yeah there are definitely other factors to the success of the players.

Our whole D Line got pushed around at least 60% of the time against decent teams, Geathers was no exception.
