As we're a year and a half into the Smart leadership group I thought it would be a good time to take stock. He's had enough time, at this point, to create and form his system in the players, program and other coaches. That said, who is his best hire? Chaney has gone from complete dumbass to wunderkind. Mel is a great dawg. I'm personally on the boat w/ Jake Rowe that Pittman is a godly hire.

scott sinclair has gotta be up there, but yes we are getting better OL recruiting than we've had maybe ever.

Pittman.
The O-Line play is remarkably better.
Still not 100% sold on Big Snacks but I'm starting to come around.

The Fatman is kinda reminding me of Bobo with his turn around. Really starting to look good with play calls. Maybe the Murray/Fromm effect?

In recent interview, Kirby said he'd like to take credit for the defense, but it's all Mel Tucker. He said as a head coach he doesn't have the time to micromanage the defense.
So I'll say Mel Tucker.
So I'll say Mel Tucker.

Honorable mention: Dell McGee.

Amazing what you can do with a solid OL, receivers that can catch, a top tier run game, a solid QB, and elite defense adn special teams.
Chaney still isn't in Bobo's league but he's definitely not the turd we thought last year.

Yeah it helps that actually has talent to work with compared to in the past. And an OL. He has been a better hire than I thought he would be.

My judgement of an OC is based on how he does without top tier personnel at every position. Anyone who has been around football can be at least marginally successful when your players are simply better than your opponents', but how does he do when he has to adjust based on weaknesses in his offense where he doesn't have great players? Getting your players to execute and play better as a group than they are individually is what I hope to see from a good/great OC.

eh, I can see that but I mean you've gotta take that into account. There was a period there where Bobo was having to rely heavily on carlton thomas in teh backfield, cox/Fr murray at QB, and poor OLines. You can only do so much.
Even when we did upgrade and had solid QB/RB talent, he still set records and called beautiful games. It's not like he all of a sudden learned how to call plays, it's just his personnel was more easily able to succesfully execute what he wanted. I see some of that same thing in chaney.

Pittman. What he's done with our OL in year 2 is outstanding; most people had written off Kendall Baker and Lamont Gaillard could very well end up as a draft pick in a couple of years. Once guys like Wilson, Netori, Salyer, etc get a year into a S&C program and Pittman coaches them up, they should be dominant for years to come.
A close #2 is Dell McGee. Dude is recruiting lights out.

Hopefully we never have to find out how good our OCs are, in that case.

Pittman. It all starts in the trenches

Agreed. If you made me choose between 5 x 5* skill players behind a 3* OL, and 3* skill positions behind a 5* OL, I'd take the 5* line every time.

Dell got us Justin Fields. He's a great recruiter. Gets my vote

I'm not sure I'm willing to go "best" on anyone, if I had to it's probably Pittman, then Dell McGee. It's not just Chubb/Sony back there crushing dudes... Swift as a freshman, Herrien/Holyfield this year as well. Prather Hudson continually gets called out as a beast on the scout team also... He clearly has those dudes operating at a high level... and that's before we talk about him as a recruiter.
Less "flashy", but Schumann deserves credit for his work with the LBs AND his work with the PWO program... as discussed in the recruiting thread, that is a big difference maker for us now taking advantage of the HOPE/Zell Miller scholarship.
