Brown is getting lost in the hype of returning starters and new recruits at LB, but he has the potential to be a contributor next year. At the 2013 Miami Nike Sparq combine, at 6'3", 235, he was the only player over 200 pounds at to run a shuttle time under 4.5 seconds (4.47). His 40 time was 4.88 and VJ of 34.5 were also very good compared to the other players at that combine. In 2012 at the Orlando combine he ran 4.77 in the 40 and a 4.58 shuttle at 6'2", 227. He also ran a 4.78 40, 4.58 shuttle at the under armour combine in 2013. Those offical combine numbers compare well with most top LB/DE not named Josh Sweat.

Brown had 79 tackles and 6 sacks as a DE in his senior year in high school, also had 12 sacks his junior year in 8 games. Here are his Junior highlights. I know we have a logjam at OLB in 2015, but Keyon has the size and athleticism to play at MLB too if needed. It will be interesting to see if he can make a push for playing time.

I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I completely forgot about him. I like the idea of him playing some MLB.

Keyon's biggest asset is his ability to pass rush. He has some big time pass rushing moves that I believe could be very valuable from an OLB spot. He should definitely get some playing time this year on 3rd downs because of his edge rushing ability.

I haven't forgot about him. I think he becomes a solid contributor next year.

At the very least, he'll be a stud on ST. I'd expect to see him get some snaps this season from one of the LB spots, too.

He's one I was anxious to see.

I agree, if he grasps the defense, could be a stud.

At that height and weight, and of course with that speed, couldn't he play some SS or Star?

Or I'd rather see him at MLB instead of OLB if he's only going to play LB. With 4.8 40 speed, that's exactly who you want running sideline to sideline and covering TE's in the second layer and mirroring mobile QB's in this spread era. He's Alec Ogletree size and speed. More pile-driving ILB's please, I'll take em.

We have 2 pretty solid ones that will start. Sure they won't be quite as productive as RW/AH right off the bat, but neither are slouches. You're acting like we're having to scour the SLC begging people to try out for MLB.

Wouldn't be shocked if two newcomers start. I don't expect to see Brown at ILB but it's possible

I think he was commenting on my use of middle linebacker as opposed to inside linebacker.

You think 2 people fresh on campus (or off redshirt) will start over Carter and Kimbrough? I think that would be a very tall order unless we get someone playing at a T.Sturdivant type level where they are just head and shoulders better than everyone else.

Carter was getting raves before blowing out his knee his first year, then has played quite well in his spot duty. Kimbrough has proven on special teams he's basically an AH clone in his style of play. I just don't see someone knocking them off without ever having played in a game before.

I just think they're better scheme fits. Coaches like to play their own guys. It's human nature. They wouldn't have brought in a 1 year transfer and a JUCO if they didn't intend for them to play a lot, and Roquan Smith is a serious talent.

I think Carter and Kimbrough both can play, but I just wouldn't be shocked if they got passed. JMO.

ETA: Herrera and Wilson were productive, but I don't get the feeling that they were the type of ILB that Pruitt would like to play. I think he wants guys who can play in space, not downhill thumpers.

Carter and Kimbrough played a lot last year and played well. Carter is a legit play maker and Kimbrough hits harder than anyone on the team. They will be our starters to replace Herrera and Wilson and they will excel.

It's the backups I'm clueless about. Should be fun to watch them compete for it.

What if Ganus, Amaechi, Smith, and/or Taylor are better? It's too early to speak in absolutes when none of us have seen any of those guys play yet.

How hard of a hitter Kimbrough is is pretty far down the list of important attributes.

Ganus and Amaechi are EEs so it would not surprise if one or both start.

Also, ILB is a position that all things being equal, coaches lean toward a leader type individual to start.

I pereonally feel that Ganus and Chuks were brought in to create immediate depth. I'd have to wait until after the spring game to form a real opinion, but at the moment I believe Carter and Kimbrough will be the starters at ILB.

No matter who the "starters" are, Pruitt is going to use a lot of guys according to the situation. Smith is by far the fastest/quickest, so he'll be in at Star or ILB in some situations if he understands what to do. If a team is running it up the gut, he'll use the bigger, more physically developed players in the middle. The term "starter" probably won't mean as much at ILB as other positions next year.
