I made a triumphant return to the Classic City this past weekend and went to Terrapin. $13 for 6 beers and a tour, with live music. Steal of a deal

Fantastic. Making some of the best beer in the state. For better or worse, Terrapin sold majority stake to MillerCoors recently. Hoping it doesn't kill their quality as it does so often.

Been wanting to go for a while, they friggin opened right when I was leaving school. Tropicalia is one of my favorites and it's like trying to find Pappy when going to liquor stores.

my best friend is HR Director for Terrapin and according to him, they are a independently run subsidiary of MillerCoors now and they will still make the same quality brews and keep the same business model they started with. MillerCoors craft line have been a minority stakeholder for a few years, so I do not see them changing much besides better distribution networks.

August is the last month for Automatic. Get it while you can, it's fantastic.

Is this one of those imaginary problems or is there a long list of examples?

It's really good. I still like Terrapin the best, they have a bigger variety, and definitely a lot more beers with hops. Plus their outdoor space is killer.

Creature comforts has fewer beers. But they tend to be really good quality. Their indoor space is really cool, but with everyone coming back for school it tends to get packed and loud. They do have the distinct advantage of being downtown, which makes it a great place to pre-game.

Southern Brewing is supposedly going to open a 1500 person outdoor amphitheater, so that could be pretty awesome. Right now they are just ok to me.

Elysian and Goose Island are a couple of AB-InBev acquisitions that are nowhere near as good as they were pre-acquisition. At least Goose Island is still able to have full control over their limited release (sour/saison lines). Similarly for Elysian, the more limited release beers generally don't change much. It's the high volume beers that get the cost cutting and efficiency treatments that gradually suck the flavor out to where it's reminiscent of that beer that you loved but not quite the same.

Most of the breweries Widmer, Red Hook, and Kona are all part of the "Craft Brewery Alliance" now and have had similar problems. It's not like the beers are unpalatable, simply not as good as they once were. (ABInBev owns roughly 30% of CBA as well and is their distribution partner) Heineken bought 50% of Lagunitas late last year, so not enough time yet to know if that will have much impact.

Generally speaking, when owned by a publicly traded company, yes there are going to be changes. With beer, slight changes to a recipe can significantly impact flavor.

Good to hear. independently run subsidiary doesn't exactly equal "full control", but again I'm hopeful this is the case.

I did know this, but I don't see how distribution networks would change much as MC has been their distribution partner as well if I'm not mistaken.

Creature Comforts is fantastic. I think Terrapin is a better brewery experience, just because there are more beers to drink. Sometimes Creature Comforts only has 4 beers on tap which is frustrating, but they are 4 very high quality beers.

SBC is a great time as well.

Supposedly they are going be able to get them into some of the markets in the western US as well as working on some deals to get them placed into rotations at some of the sports venues as well. I am just going by what my buddy told me, they seem to be very excited about the acquisition.

If they could get some distribution out to Dallas, I'd be ecstatic.

Creature Comforts is phenomenal. The brewery itself isn't quite as exciting as Terrapin but the beer is the best in town. Tropicalia is an A+ IPA and when it is around the Cosmik Debris is one of the best DIPAs out there. Got a bottle of Emergence at home, but haven't had the opportunity to open it yet... I'm thinking 5:30 on 9/3 just might be the ticket.

Not as family friendly as the other two... Outdoor space is a parking lot.

Always crowded inside.

Beer and location are good tho.

Agree, tropicalia replaced terrapin rye as my favorite apa. Dale's is my buffer.

I do hate the name tropicalia though.

I just feel like a gayfer saying it out loud.
