"Georgia didn’t even so much as bother to pick up the phone and call Houston’s Tom Herman, for instance, even though his representatives had made it abundantly clear that there was interest"
I still think Kirby can do the job, and will be a good one in the long run. But if there's even a modicum of truth to this it's incredibly upsetting, since we were told that he had no interest at all.

No we weren't. Of course he was interested.
The problem with hiring Herman was/is the current instability at Texas. That's pretty well-known to be his dream job. Getting Kiffined was in play. Smart is also the dream scenario recruiting wise if he can figure the on-field stuff out. It's a risk, but a reasonable one.

I seem to specifically remember that the AD didn't pursue Herman because he just wasn't interested. I could be wrong, but I feel like I remember hearing that.

McGarity would have hired Mullen if it was his choice. He didn't get to make that call. There was only one candidate that was ever seriously considered.

You may have heard that, but I feel like it's just an easier way to justify Smart.
I feel like a coach at Houston would definitely have at least some interest in UGA, even if he wasn't 100% going to take the job.
I wish we would have pursued him harder, but I'm hopeful that Kirby will right the ship.

This goes to prove that we have two incompetent parties arguing with each other. Yay.

I don't think there is much proof that Herman is an elite coach yet. He has had a very easy schedule, and just recently lost to Navy. I still have faith in Kirby, just starting next year.

And to be clear, I don't know that Herman would have done any better this year. I also still am onboard with Kirby being the guy. But if we had a solid chance at the hottest coaching prospect in football (who actually had been a head coach) and we didn't at least try for him... that's seriously fricked on all levels.

You think this team would beat Oklahoma? We just lost to Vandy and will probably lose to Navy's poorly run cousin, GT.

Who knows? I believe very little what I read in the media. Their job is to get clicks. They do this by creating controversy. They succeeded.

I don't doubt that Herman might have been interested but his home and recruiting base is in the Texas area and the transition might well have been difficult. Any career minded coach would express and interest in a HC job at a program like Georgia but that does not mean said job is their preference. I seriously doubt that Herman had a burning desire to come to Athens.

All of this

The football world knows Herman wants the Texas job when it next comes open, which may be this year. Herman would have had a "Kiffen Clause" and left as soon as Texas called. Likely 1 or 2 years and he would have taken his staff with him. It would not have been a good choice.

Sounds more like the usual anti-UGA reporting out of Atlanta.

I'm sure the search firm we paid 100's of thousands of dollars to, completely explored that option. Insert eyeroll.

Some said that. I never agreed.

Actually, I try to never look back and play "What if...".
You make the best decision you can with the information you have at the time, and then you live with it.
I'm disappointed with how things have turned out this year, but I think Kirby will get things straightened out. I might criticize him some times...but in the end he is not our coach. He wanted to come here and most of us wanted him here. (I was one of those.)
As I said in another thread, looking back on it, I would have preferred a young up and coming head coach from a smaller school.....but I wanted Kirby Smart at the time, and i think with time he will prove to be what we needed, if we don't run him off prematurely.

I wanted Herman.
But as soon as the Mullen talk started to get drummed up I jumped on the Smart Train.
