Am I the last person to find out that UGA has a 110 year old Skull & Bones type Illuminati secret society called Gridiron.......that invisibly controls all politics and commerce within the state.......and, to some degree, also on a national level?

WTF?

I don't think it's a UGA alum only thing, though. Jimmy Carter is a member, as are Herschel and Dooley. I believe all GA Governors and some Senators are also members.

As a member myself, I can tell you that it does not exist.

We have honorary associate members... Pretty much anyone high up on the political food chain in GA. They are not full members. We even have black people now

i wouldn't have admitted this, honestly...are you not an alum? not that that's a bad thing but the Gridiron Society is pretty well known within the state if you're plugged in, in any way.

not sure about the "national" level but i do know Saxby is a member. He was on the Senate Arms Services Committee and Vice Chair of Senate Committee on Intelligence at some point.

Why not? Please go into more unbearably snobbish detail on why I shouldn't have. Thanks.

Is it true that the "gridiron" has nothing to do with a football field as most think......... but is instead a reference to St. Lawrence the Martyr.....who was put to death by fire roasted on a "gridiron"?

Uh oh........

What do you mean by "plugged in, in any way"?

I started this thread because I think the idea of a tight-lipped secret society full of politicians and politician-wannabes is fricking hilarious.

But, i never expected people who aren't even a part of the damn thing to try and bask in it's reflected glow. Ha!

This is GREAT!

It's not. UT has the Scarabs (Scarabean Society) which is connected to Yale's Skull and Bones. Ironically, the average student doesn't know they exist. I do remember there were some articles in the Daily Beacon (student newspaper either in the late 90s or mid-2000s) but no one remembers those.

Some notable members/Scarabs that are fairly well confirmed:

--Howard Baker Sr. - US Representative

--Howard Baker Jr. - Senate Majority Leader admired by BOTH parties, including myself. Also served as Reagan's WH Chief of Staff as well as the Ambassador to Japan. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and Order of the Paulownia Flowers (Japan). Only a handful of foreigners have ever been awarded this and only about 4-5 Americans.

--Estes Kaufaver - Most notable for being 1 of only 2 southern senator who refused to sign the racist "Southern Manifesto." Maybe even more notable given he was born in 1910!

--Randolph Neal, Jr. - Best known as a major part of the defense team during the Scopes Monkey trial. (What most don't realize is that the whole point for many Tennesseans was to intentionally bring it to court to have the Butler law overthrown - that was the whole reason the teacher did what he did).

I bet folks would be surprised at both society's membership lists. They are both older than dirt.
