what's been making him look slow. Because in high school he was like lighting on punt and kick returns. A lot of plays he missed in the Clemson and USCe games weren't just bad angles, but his hammy was still bothering him. He down-played it though...

I hope so cause as of right now...he isn't exactly living up to the hype.. Its only 2 games into the season though. But I expect marked improvement throughout the entire Defense soon...being ranked 102 in rushing yards given up is not only atrocious, but fricking embarrassing to boot.

I hope it's mostly just the fast-paced nature of things and he'll speed up once he gets more familiar with the scheme and reading the offense.

I think it's just too early to judge him and it really sucks his debuts have come against top 10 Clemson and South Carolina

Damn guys he's a true freshman whose first two games were against top 10 games, injured. Give the kid a break.

I understand that he is a true freshman...I understand we played some great teams...but the hype train was loud and proud about Mathews...I for one expected a game changer from day 1...but here is hoping for quick maturation...

I really think it has more to do with his knowledge of the playbook. When you're not 100% sure what you do on a given play or how to react, you play slower. He'll play faster in time, the talent is there.

Everyone knew he was hurting... Hammy injuries suck and they slow you down. As far as being ranked 102 in defense, that is a rather invalid stat since a lot of teams have played 1 or 2 games against significantly inferior opponents. The D has not been where we need it to be though...

I think, as most do, the defense will get better with more games. This weekend should be a good week to iron out some wrinkles and get some good reps.

Lost in the shuffle of defensive woes through the first two games is the fact that we are averaging 38 points a game against top 10 teams.

Granted, neither seems to have an amazing D this season but...we are putting TD's on the board against high level competition. I don't know that most of the rest of the top 10 can say the same thus far.
