UGA Athletic Board Meeting Updates

quote:

UGA athletic board approves $9 million for facilities. $1.8 mil for Stegeman interior mural, $4.5 million for soccer facility improvements.

UGA athletic board approves $1 million for planning home football locker room and recruiting area on Sanford Stadium west end zone side.

UGA athletic board approved record $123 million budget for fiscal year 2017, a $5.6 million increase.

Wow. Just announced that UGA will be building its new stadium locker room and recruiting area under the west endzone stands and under the bridge. No seating will be affected but that completely changes the dynamics of the stadium and that area of campus. Dawg walk will now have players arrive in suits or such and get ready at te stadium rather than at butts mehre

I believe is meant for the giant space that will be left once the current scoreboard is taken down for the new jumbotron.

So, while we take one step forward with a hanging jumbotron, we take two steps back with a giant mural depicting basketball and gymnastics

Kinda off topic but what happened to the talk of Sanford Stadium being expanded to 100,000 ?Something about bringing the seats all around the stadium to block the bridge view?

This will never happen and that was mostly fan led discussion, anyway.

If Sanford was ever expanded again (highly doubtful it ever will be barring a few national titles and a resurgence of fans wanting to drop gobs of money on tickets year in and year out) it would be to wrap around the 600 level on the East side of stadium (which would also require shutting down and eventually tunneling East Campus Rd under the stadium, which though would be fricking cool as hell would cause all sort of logistical nightmares and cost a small fortune).

In short, expanding isn't feasible anymore (we barely have the stadium full for most home games until the 2nd quarter anyway), especially considering that the stadium badly needs cosmetic, concessions, bathroom, and concourse upgrades before anything else.

We'll never expand past the current 92,746 (maybe a few) during my lifetime. We're sitting at a perfect capacity now, just enough to keep everyone donating their Hartman fund $ and keeping the stadium sold out every year... ATM is gonna have issues in their 105,000 cathedral shortly... jmoW Rx see e

So this means when the team runs out onto the field before the game they'll be coming from the west endzone?

Not a huge deal I suppose, just gonna be really frickin weird to see them coming out the opposite side.

I think he was talking to dallas.

I ran across this:

quote:

Enhancements to Stegeman Coliseum, Phase 1 - $1,800,000. Plans include a large-scale aesthetic improvement to the southeast end zone, a space currently occupied with achievement banners of all three sports competing in the Coliseum. The display – which will consists of a mural featuring former UGA men’s and women’s basketball players, along with former gymnastics greats, will surround, keeping intact, the existing video board.

Like you, I thought we were entering the 21st century and getting a hanging board but the wording here makes that seem like not the case. Or maybe they're leaving the relic and adding a hanging one in addition?

Yep exactly what it means. IMO it kills two birds with one stone: gives us the new locker room and recruit area while also cleaning up the area under the bridge.

Man the last guy in line is gonna have to start from his seat. Wiht the current setup they've got that looong walkway under the east stands, doesn't seem like there's a ton of room to work with in teh west.

Last I'd heard for at least 2 years now where that we'd already allocated the money and everything for a hanging unit. If we're no longer doing that and now adding murals to the shitty Fat Head banners we have up there, Stegeman just found a way to get even shittier

My guess is the entire handicap walkway is done away with along with the concession stands and bathrooms. Gonna be interesting to see how they change the entries to the seats

interesting indeed. I know there are little "parking spots" so to speak around the 100 level for wheelchairs to sit, but obviously that area behind the west endzone is the main accessible area. Very curious to see how they handle that issue if that is removed.
