Any at all? Im not so sure... Again, it's a HUGE risk that will define the programs direction for the next 5-10 years. You want to talk about falling in the pits if the Tennessee's, Nebraska's, of the world, this could be it.

I really fricking hate it when people say " the Tennessees, Nebraskas, Texases" of the world when all these aforementioned programs HAVE WON A frickING TITLE SINCE 1997.

You wanted Richt replaced. You now have it. A new blueprint is here. A new era has begun.

EMBRACE IT.

No. The talent UGA will bring in, alone, will carry us through any first time head coach bumps. Big question now is who they bring in at OC. Hopefully hear something soon.

Let's see how the staff rounds out and what magic Kirby can do between now and signing day before prejudging

With all due respect what the hell do you want? I mean really? Kirby is probably the best recruiter in football, unbelievably competitive, well respected by his peers, reared by a head coach, groomed by Richt and Saban and is an Alum. Short of hiring god, meaning Urban or Saban, who would you bring in? The only think Kirby doesn't have is the hat that says "Boss". A blind squirrel or Richt could win 7-8 games as GA's coach. Hopefully Kirby will be better than a blind squirrel.

I'm OK with it as long as we don't get stuck with Muschamp. I can get over losing Pruitt easier than I can get over being saddled with Muschamp. You can't be extremely antagonistic to officials and win. SEC officials have it in for Muschamp and they always will.

Any hire we could make was going to be risky. At least there's substantial upside with Smart

Kirby has been one of the more highly coveted coaching prospects for a long, long time. It sounds like he may bring a tremendous staff with him. This was about as good of a hire as we could have asked for, considering guys like Saban, Meyer, Harbaugh obviously wouldn't even entertain a phone call.

With the staff that could be coming with him, it looks like the sleeping giant that is Georgia football may finally be waking up.

I was hoping for Herman and keeping Pruitt but Kirby should be a solid hire from a recruiting perspective and honestly that is how the best teams are winning: with superior recruiting. Just imagine if we had in-state recruit, Deshawn Watson, this season along with multiple other 4 and 5 star players that have gone to other programs that we filled with 3 star players. There's a reason that UGA is the only team in the top 10 in recruiting that has more 3 star recruits than 4 stars: we are losing out on 4 and 5 star prospects.

No. For two reasons

A) Kirby had adgm's balls in a fricking vice and he knew it. Think he and Saban didn't discuss it after the Richt firing? The whole country knew Kirby was the guy. Another few weeks of coaches falling off the board and us looking like LSU just now and the calls for McG's head would be deafening. therefore Smart will operate with autonomy as it should be

2) Nobody is going to forget that we fired Gods tennis partner that won 10 games almost every season. NOBODY.Im not saying it'll be a 2yr plan, but it won't be a fricking 5yr plan either. There are pressures that come with this hiring. Big ones. And I have to believe Smart is shrewd enough and has competent enough council to know this

At worst he'll leave the place stacked for the next guy.

If he brings in the 4 and 5 stars and hires some decent coaches , the world will be our oyster.

...and I bet he won't be having to pay bonuses to coaches out of his own pocket.

Elite staff and wide open spot. If Eason doesn't come, I bet we flip 2 big time Qbs.

There are pros and cons.

The pros:

The pros are immediate and well known -

1. UGA had a plan, followed it, and got their top choice. No Chinese fire drill while we tried to figure out what the heck we want, get spurned by our top choices in front of God and everybody, and pick up some WTF hire out of blind desperation (here's looking at YOU Tennessee! ). Nor did they treat CMR like yesterday's piece of shiite and leave him twisting in the wind as a head coach dead man walking (here's looking at YOU LSU! )

2. He can recruit. Really, really well. With the class we currently have in place, plus the recruits we are still in on, this is a major plus.

3. It was well known that he was the next big time coordinator that was waiting for the right HC job to pull the trigger. So, again, this is not a WTF hire. Which is really important given who we just showed the door.

4. He is a Georgia alum. Not a huge deal, but it makes for a nice, positive story that should give us good momentum during the off-season.

5. It's a nice transition from Richt, and Richt will likely have some very positive things to say about it. Again, CMR is a class act and this helps. But it's not easy to pull off. FSU and Bowden botched the end of their relationship, as did Tennessee, Florida with Urban, LSU and Miles, and the list goes on. This could be an amazingly smooth transition given the circumstances, which will help us with recruits, alumni, boosters and the media.

6. He'll have some nice toys to play with. CMR will be leaving him with a much better program than he inherited. In just about every facet of the program, including personnel, players and facilities. Kirby is coming into a helluva nice situation for a brand new coach.

The Cons:

Plenty of these as well, starting and ending with -

1. We honestly don't know if he can coach. Kind of a big one, but let's be honest about it. Yeah, he had some great defenses. He also has always had the best and deepest group of athletes in college football to put on the field. Every year. For example, he didn't have to out coach Georgia's offense this year. Just ran his base defense and that's it. Must be nice, but he won't have that luxury at Georgia, certainly not right away.

1(a). We don't even know if he was running 'his' defense. Saban is a defensive coach and a great one, so it is likely Saban's defense we've seen at Alabama, and Saban spent most of his coaching on the defense. Now, after 8 years, I'm sure Smart has made it his as well. But he got it from Saban. We don't know how he can adjust on his own or what he might come up with on his own.

1(b). We don't know how he will handle the extra responsibilities and pressure of being the head guy. Especially the pressure of following the winningest coach in the history of the school, who was pretty well beloved by all, regardless of what you thought of the end product on the field.

Anyway, I'm just glad UGA had a plan on what to do after canning Richt, followed through, and made it happen. The pros in this hiring kick in immediately- as to the cons? Guess we'll wait and see. And I can live with that.

Nailed it. There was no hire that could be made that didn't carry with it intrinsic risk. As several others have stated, Tom Herman would have been my #1 choice, but Kirby was a hell of a #2 and clearly was ADGM's #1. Having the plan and the ability to execute it is comforting, particularly given my opinion of ADGM anyways.

I hear what you're saying but if you look realistically at the options....and realize the recruiting is a huge part of college football...who would be better?

Other than Saban..what other SEC coach would you want? Dabo's not coming...so who in the ACC? Harbaugh and Meyer aren't coming...and these other mid-major guys are great coaches but they have eithe regional ties or are waiting for other spots to open. Hell...Herman was an OC a year ago and he's being treated like the second coming.

This will be a great hire and if we nail the OC spot we'll be in excellent shape.

Don't listen to the press. Embrace it ...

I have an idea: As an unlikable and chronically miserable out-of-state sidewalker............ you should promise not to buy anymore $10 dollar Georgia Bulldog hats from your local South Carolina walmart..........in protest!!!

Ha, heee! frick ya.
