the issue I see is this... if Smart can not beat teams who UGA is more talented than now, why should we expect him to win it all when he gets more talent?

THis is the best point that's been made on the subject anywhere to date.

we'll probably do dumb things still but just FYI briscoe was only playign because baker was out with an injury. It's not like we intentionally chose to play him over baker.

I expect him to get better, just like every other person starting any job.

You're right that none are guaranteed, but seven games in is way to early to sound the alarm.

Is he going to learn to be a better coach?

Three things jump out immediately about whether he can actually learn on the job and become a better coach......

1) He's been doing it the same way for the same head coach for more than a decade. His exposure to multiple influences is at zero. And has only seen it done one solitary way, for the most part. That's not exactly the recipe for a dynamic problem solver.

2) He's stubborn. Stubborn to the point of being obstinate at times. Which is overboard to thge point of being comical for any first time head coach.

3) He's a Saban syllabus replicator bot. I haven't seen one single original move made by Smart so far. You'd think after all that time as an underling there might be at least one or two things he always thought he'd do differently, but so far, no. Maybe that's why Saban loved him so much. Just a total devoted yes-man follower of his syllabus.

Just to play devils advocate, you can say the exact same things about Richt.

1) Was at FSU with bowden from 85-88 and 90-2000. Bowden's way was all richt knew.

2) Richt was so stubborn he still called plays (bc that's what he was used to) for his first 6 years.

3) Mat drills, a hurry up offense, etc were all brought from FSU because that's what richt knew. And honestly, I would expect a first year coach to go with what he knows, and there's not a better blueprint to follow than the one kirby has.

You are a fool if you believe he is not adding some of his personal touch to "The Process." Just because you have not seen it doesn't mean he isn't doing it. You are not part of the internal workings of the program so GTFO with that crap.

I was messing with K9...but seriously...

I agree with all of your points but am looking at it from a different place. Some of the problems we've had are new coach growing pains. I expect these to improve.

For X's & O's, I'm assuming CKS knows how to coach defense and Pittman knows how to coach the OL. Chaney is a BIG question mark but I'm also willing to give him the benefit of the doubt because he has some challenges. Beamer has failed IMO because some of the things happening on ST's could be correct immediately (i.e. spacing or returns or fielding rugby kicks).

Other issues are players that make dumb mistakes. We've had this problem for a while and I'm not sure a players reaction in a situation can be improved within a single season. You can tell a guy not to field the kickoff on the 1 next to the sideline....or don't tip the ball defending a pass on a 4th down....or go to your check down receiver....but unless you've drilled that into them via repetitive practice you don't know how that will play out in real time. These are the things that I don't think can be impacted in 1 year - regardless of the coach.

And before the CMR folks come in saying "...we used to blame CMR for the same things" - he had these kids for years so yeah...but even then you tell a kid to bat down the ball on 4th down and he doesn't...is this technique, discipline or poor practice habits? If you're telling him that in the huddle is it already too late?

I expect all of this to improve within the next 2 years...and I think CKS's approach to football will yield better results than we've seen in a while. I think his potential is higher than CMR's - even if he didn't hit the ground at that level day 1. If not, I'll be right there with you.

Until then, I'm just tired of bitching about UGA coaches and think CKS deserves some time to get his feet under him. Every other coach gets this as a new hire. He's not Herman, Gruden or Saban - but that's not his fault. What was he supposed to do? Not take the job?

And here is my problem. I don't blame Smart for those types of mistakes, even though Richt took the brunt of criticism for them. I don't think that was fair, either.

Why? A kid is told these things over and over and over again, from the time they are freshmen in high school. If they are still doing these things at this level all the coaching in the world won't get through to them. Honestly? I think those type mistakes stem from a kid reacting instinctively on a split second decision. Every one of us have done dumb things while driving and thought, "That was stupid, I wish I could have that one back." Same thing. Yet, coaches seem to always catch the blame for it.

I would agree if we had maybe a season and a half worth of results to judge on. He should get more time to prove he can keep up and make the necessary adjustments. I think at minimum that means one full recruiting cycle, one full season, and one offseason.

He won't get canned this year no matter what, but for his sake we better win 2 of 3 vs UF/AU/GT. It will be a long offseason if we don't.

I think we will win one of those. Give me a dart and I will tell you which one.

IMO....it could go either way. If you're a Sr on my squad and after 4 years you do something - maybe I should have drilled that situation enough so you knew how to react.

What gets complicated is when you have a DB that has been trained to always tip the ball .... or catch the ball .... and now on 4th and long you don't want them to do that. It's unrealistic to blame the coaches on that (thanks AU), it was just shitty luck and a bad reaction. Having situational awareness only goes so far if it's against what you'd normally do.

Or, on the Vandy screen you tell them to watch for it, practice it all week, tell them it's coming....and the guy still doesn't make the play? That's not on CKS at this stage...but 3 years from now? They should execute that play.

Also, if I'm a new coach and inherit a SR QB that can't make a read or step into a throw....I can't coach him out of that in a season...no matter how good I am.

Like most things is life...there is no easy answer.

you continuously speak of misdirection and deflection...only one reason why you would be able to point it out so easily......

and your point was?....all you did was try and offend me and rustle jimmies about me coaching young kids in football...a cheap shot imho

you failed to discuss the original question I posed you...do you not realize that some of the guys on the team that are older do not buy in to Kirby's regurgitated (as you would say) "process"?....he is inheriting a mess and it is quite foolish to be leading this campaign of yours that he doesn't know how to coach...you were the same guy that thought Schottenheimer was gonna be the greatest OC we had ever hired....how did that work out?

ive been posting with the dots well before you were here bud...not gonna stop now

My point was...

-you gave an arena speech condemning all critics of Kirby Smart
-within it you hilariously cited your peewee midget league coaching experience
-later, an adult conversation evolved among some other posters.
-within that discussion, i pointed out that it's the coaches job/responsibility/duty to win games and to find a way to reach, motivate, coach up, etc his players.
-this is common knowledge and not controversial
-So..........
-when you chimed back in unable to comprehend this basic concept
-i then made a joke about how if you don'tunderstand that concept you will probably not advance past the peewwee coaching ranks
-Are you still with me?
-No. Probably not. WHy the frick am i having to explain this??"?

I disagree...some kids just don't want change and don't want to be motivated...no matter how hard you try...its like some people just don't want to be cordial on message boards...they just have it in their head that they must always stay with their shtick of being an obnoxious prick who thinks he knows everything.................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................and another thing...the OP was not "arena speech"...it was started...which I rarely do anyway...cause this board sucks compared to what it used to be...even when there were huge issues at UGA...like the 05 WVU bowl game.....and the Tereshinki debacle....it was at least funny to read...now its a bunch of whining and bitching about shite that none of us can change and guys literally living on here posting the same tired thoughts in EVERY fricking thread...
