Yeah I get playing LSU,Bama and AU every year but you'd
think he would've squeaked out a couple more.

I thought had a few more than that especially with DP.

Vastly overrated coach who has built his reputation on beating 1AA/MAC/Sun Belt teams and the likes of Kentucky and Vanderbilt in conference.

I just love it when people on here chalk up this as a win

Nobody is chalking this up as win......

It's Moo State game week and it came up as a relevant subject about our opponent.

I agree, this game is going to be tough. Hoping we can get the running game going and that our secondary doesn't get scorched.

His past has very little to do with this weekend, but that wasnt the question.

We can look at his record heading into 2017. 61-42(29-35)

2009
Wins:Jackson St, Vandy, MTSU, Kentucky, Ole Miss

2010
Memphis, Georgia, Alcorn St, Houston, Florida, UAB, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Michigan

2011
Memphis, La Tech, UAB, Kentucky, Tenn-Martin, Ole Miss, Wake Forest

2012
Jackson St, Auburn, Troy, S Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee, MTSU, Arkansas

2013
Alcorn St, Troy, Bowling Green, Kentucky, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Rice

2014
So Miss, UAB, S Alabama, LSU, Texas A&M, Auburn, Kentucky, Arkansas, Tenn-Martin, Vanderbilt

2015
So Miss, Northwestern State, Auburn, Troy, La Tech, Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas, NC State

2016
South Carolina, UMASS, Samford, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Miami(OH)

vs Sun Belt:5-1
vs MAC:2-0
vs C USA 9-0
vs AAC 3-1
vs 1AA 8-0
vs P5 0-3

So thats a record of 27-2 in non-conference games against bad teams. That give him 3.4 wins a year.

Also of note, Miss State has played a power 5 team three times during their non-conference schedule and has lost all of them(BYU, Oklahoma State, Georgia Tech).

Kentucky is their permanent game from the east. They are 7-1 against them under Mullen. Also, 2-0 against Vanderbilt, and 1-0 against a bad Missouri two years ago.
Thats a record of 10-1.

So we've accounted for 37 of his 61 wins there.

He is 4-4 career against Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, and South Carolina. Thats not bad right there.

Lets look at his bowl record before heading to the west. Wins against Miami(OH), North Carolina State(7-6), Rice, Wake Forest(6-7), and Michigan(7-6). Losses against Georgia Tech(10-3), and Northwestern(9-3).

We are up to 45 wins, with the signature wins against a 7-6 Michigan team in a bowl, a 6-7 Georgia team, and a 8-5 Florida team.

vs the West
Alabama 0-8
LSU 1-7(win vs 8-5 LSU)
Auburn 3-5(beat 8-5, 7-6 Auburn teams)
Arkansas4-4(beat 7-6, 8-5 Auburn teams)
Texas AM2-3(beat 8-5, 8-5 A&M teams)
Ole Miss5-3(beat 8-5, 9-4 Ole Miss teams)

Only has a winning record against Ole Miss, and his biggest win in his career is against a 9-4 Ole Miss teams. The rest are against mediocre teams.

This. All of this post. None of this has shite to do with whether this team will be difficult to beat this weekend, simply that the reputation of Dan Mullen as somehow the second best coach in the SEC by a wide margin is overblown. He is a good coach, and he's done impressive things with Miss St. They haven't finished in the bottom of the SEC West in his tenure (or at least not after his first year or two). As a team that was essentially the perennial SECW cellar dweller, that's a feat in and of itself.

He doesn't often take them and beat teams that are flat out more talented. They have 16 "blue chip" players on their team. We have 54... At the end of the day, star ratings don't guarantee star performances, but you have to like our depth. By no means do I think we win this running away... I assume the game will be close simply because that's the kind of game we have to play until either Fromm takes a GIANT leap forward or we return Eason *and* he shows marked improvement from last season. Otherwise, we're going to have to grind out wins. I do think our defense is sufficient to cause problems for Miss State, particularly after seeing how LSU gave the game away with dumb penalties, poor effort, etc. They should have our full attention going into this one. Offensively for us, will be a bigger question mark, but I like our chances to wear out their line over the course of the game in order to get the backs to do damage late. Probably a close game for at least 3 quarters with a lot of us not feeling super comfortable, but home game, more horses, I like our chances to win by 7-10 when it's all said and done.

Yeah, he's known for winning the ones he's supposed to (minus a few South Alabama's here and there). Been like that since he started.

I fully expect it to be a close game that could go either way but, I personally think UGA pulls it out.

UGA 24-17

Nothing matters until we play. Mullen coaches in the toughest division in the SEC, and despite commonly thought of as an arse, he's been loyal to State. Gotta respect that and what they do with the talent they get.

Yeah, I would definitely say he has a knack for coaching up his talent. To do what he has in the past couple of years with mostly 2 and 3 *'s has been pretty exceptional. I would love to see what he could do with a roster full of 4's and 5's but, not at the expense of losing him to a school where that would actually be possible.

He tried to get the Miami job a couple years ago. They opted for a recently-fired coach instead of the great Dan Mullen though.
