So I'm sitting in neyland. A couple of chicks leave a small wallet and a jacket to go pee or whatever. A few minutes later, two cops swoop down with flashlights and start going through their shite. Is that even legal?
I asked them if they found what they needed and they said yeah. What a couple of twats.

Yes, it's perfectly legal and common sense for law enforcement. I work from time to time with LE ,though not cops, and that's prett standard. If you leave anything unattended, your asking for problems. And incredibly dumb.

But is "asking for it" and being "incredibly dumb" the same as a government employee being authorized to go through your stuff? I'd argue, and I think the constitution would argue with me, that the answer is a resounding hell fricking no.

It's incrediably dumb because who leaves their shite alone. You simply can't expect any privacy anymore. You should have it, but any sense you have now of it is a facade. I don't like it any more than anyone else but that's the world. If you lived in a hut, maybe, but the second you turn on your computer, your telling the world your private secrets.

Again, I'm not arguing whether or not it's "dumb" to leave stuff unattended. I'm arguing whether or not it is morally right or lawful for the police to do what the OP described.
Those aren't the same things. If every time I did something dumb it was a valid response to violate my civil liberties, well, that'd be a scary and unjust world IMO.

morally right, obviously no. Lawful, maybe. It depends on how the laws are drawn up in tennessee. In recent years, the laws have been drawn up that the burden of proof for doing this stuff is very low. The cop would just have to justify that he felt like there was a threat in the purse or some stuff like that. Lawmakers have signed away the rights of the American people to appear tough on crime.

This...EXACTLY. Do you have facebook? Do you surf the internet? Then you are being tracked and have no privacy. We willingly give up our privacy every single day of our lives then cry because we have no privacy. We tweet every time we go to the bathroom, our friends post on Facebook every time we get the flu......we haven't had any privacy for years and we willingly give it away.
We hate the police until we are threatened, stalked, our homes broken into, then we want to know why the police were not more proactive. When guys get a little older you will take on a whole different way of looking at things.
Ok. MOST of you will. Some will always remain hippies and complain about "The Man" until they die.

You would have to ask several questions. Did they ask someone to watch their stuff? If not, people get up and walk off leaving valuables more often than you would think losing money, coats, gloves, scarves, etc. Then they can't understand why somebody didn't check it out, or let them know.

What civil liberties were violated? They saw abandoned property and checked it out. They did not search the person or seize their property.

You may not, but I would. If it had been a private citizen, no one would think a thing about it. They would be praising them for being civic minded and watching after someone private property. To fully grasp the situation we would need more information. Did the girls ask someone to watch over their things? Did they inform to police they would be back? How long were they gone?

You fail to realize that most cops are not out to violate your rights. Although I can't be certain I am reasonably sure that those cops did not just show up to go through someones wallet. They were likely called about unattended property (which is an easy target for thieves). They go through the property to figure out whose it is (or if it is suspicious I.E. a bomb). If they decided that they were not going to go through the purse or bag to see whose it was or to see if it was suspicious you all would be crying when it was later stolen (or blows up)because the police didn't do anything. There are most certainly cops that bend the rules and violate rights but coming from the mouth of a cop the vast majority are just men and women trying to do a hard job the best they know how.

Actually...I just happened to run into a friend who is a police officer this morning and asked about this. he said it would be considered abandoned property since nobody was asked to watch it and nobody was there to take care of it. By law, they had every right to check it out.
It's not like they randomly stopped someone and did a strip search. There was a coat and a wallet (that might contain cash and/or credit cards) lying there with nobody watching it.
