Did I see correctly that UCLA plays Nebraska on December 26th? Didn't Nebraska finish 5-7? How did they qualify for a bowl?

I don't know all the details, but there were quite a few teams get invited to a bowl that won 5 games. Not sure why though. Stupid in my opinion, a bowl should be a reward.

Because there are way too many damn bowls and not enough good teams to fill them.

What I don't get is how the money works for these bowl games. Surely they can't sell enough tickets or get enough TV revenue to make money for bowls like this - so why do they do it? Somebody has to be making money off of these bowls for them to keep having them year after year.

TV and sponsor revenue pays for it many times over again.

OP - there weren't enough 6-6 or better teams to fill all the bowls, so they had to go to 5-7 teams

There weren't enough 6 win teams so the NCAA had to choose three 5-7 teams to fill out the field. The way that they determined which 5-7 teams would be selected was by choosing the three schools who had the highest Academic Progress Rate (APR).

Really? Wow. I don't see how because the return on investment has to be pretty low for some of these games.

Mizzou had the decency to refuse their invitation. At least some people have a little self respect.

This. It's apparently a lucrative arrangement for businesses to sponsor these bowl games.

ESPN ownes almost all of these smaller bowls. Even games like Ohio vs Appalachian State give them ratings that dwarf whatever they could show at that time slot. Those higher ratings mean a lot more money from advertising. Plus, they get advertising money from Advocare or R+L Carriers or whatever sponsor has naming rights for the bowl. Ticket sales mean absolutely nothing.

Exactly, the stadium could be empty and they would still make money. I don't have a problem with so many bowl games. It's just more exibition games to watch, plus the kids get an extra game to play after finals. Nobody has to watch them.

why don't they have the Loser Bowl which would pit the 2 worse teams in D1. That I would watch.

Kind of like Mr. Irrelevant in the NFL draft.

Thanks, guys! I appreciate the insight. I had no idea you could go with a 5 win season. I wish they would cut it off at 8 or 9 wins actually.

I agree with you WhopperDawg. I think it would be more interesting to see two of the worst teams play each other. It would be entertaining to see which team is more inept.

Kansas would be bowl eligible

That'd be awesome. If Kansas wins today they are no longer bowl eligible at 1-11. A loss would seal their fate and trip to Cleveland for the toilet bowl

Pretty stupid IMO.You get an extra 15 days of practice and most coaches use it as a tool to evaluate their younger players for the following year. Also, gives you a jump on spring practice.

frick that. I wish there was a bowl game on right now.

I'd rather watch Delaware community college and Arkansas a&m state play each other in the Dukes Mayonnaise Bowl than watch any of the NFL games on right now. . .

Agree with this. Mizzou is once again an embarrassment to the SEC. Bowl proceeds are split among the SEC conference members yet Missouri declines their bowl? They should not get their cut as a result if you ask me.

Extacly why I think there are to many bowl games. Plus alot of the team's are losing money just by playing the game just for the cost of travel and such. I remember how when Florida won the title, they were actually upside down in cost and didn't really make any money being there. It's crazy how that happens.
