An under-apprectiated stat from the Richt Era

This isn't an argument for or against Richt. Just a fun stat I found the other day for some offseason fodder.

We were great against defending national champs. 4-2 with one of those losses being the 2012 SECCG.

2004 vs. LSU

2007 vs. Florida

2008 vs. LSU

2011 vs. Auburn

Also, we were 5-4 when playing defending SEC champions.

Lol... Because the next year's roster is always just as good as the team that won the championship the year before. Mildly interesting I suppose, but by and large a meaningless stat.

Exactly. For instance, that 2011 Auburn team with 8-5 overall and 4-4 in the SEC after winning the NC with Newton in 2010.

Wasn't arguing for or against Richt either, simply that the stat is not only *not* under-appreciated, but that it really doesn't mean anything at all. If we're providing it for offseason fodder, we should be able to critique the value or lack thereof for it as well, should we not? I will admit I replied to that post shortly after getting of of an irritating phone call so my tone might have been a bit glib, but I stand by the point.

Fair enough. Under-appreciated was probably a bad choice of words. I was looking at highlights of the 04 LSU game and admittedly was just looking for an excuse to post highlights of those games. Particularly the LSU game and the Auburn beatdown

As evidenced by the fact that he was coaching against the defending champs, not coaching the defending champs.

Sure he can. He just can't win Eastern Division titles.

Well technically.

He ranks tied 3rd all time with division titles with 6 and is tied for 2nd with most division titles at 1 school

Saban - 9 ( Bama-6, LSU-3 )
Spurrier- 8 (UF-7, USC-1)
Richt- 6
Fulmer - 6
Tubberville-5 (Auburn-5, OM-0)
Stallings-4
Miles-3
Nutt-3 (Arky-3, OM-0)
Pinkle-2

Yes...but only 2 of those were within the last 10 years.

I'm not saying there shouldn't have been a change.

But the comment was he couldn't win the East. And that's not true.

I am pretty sure the comment was directed towards his last 10 years. Only 2 times out of 10 while also losing to the runner up both times is pretty bad.
