So barring a 10 win season, Sumlin appears gone this year.
Who are your serious candidates to replace him?

I would go with one of:

Freeze
Patterson
Herman
Morris

I think Herman could do very well in the SEC but have second thoughts about hiring another coach from UH. Freeze knows what it take$ to get it done. Patterson takes guys we don't even recruit and beats people with them. Morris is an Aggie and would fight for us 24/7 but is not proven yet. Who would you pick and why?

Herman isn't coming here

Patterson makes as much as Sumlin now, why would he leave TCU? Forget it

We wouldn't hire Freeze if he was fire by old miss and we wouldn't pursue him while he is still there

If we fire Sumlin next year, odds are we will go after a guy like Matt Rhule of Temple or Jeff Brohm of Western Kentucky.

I think 9-4 and it's a 50/50 shot we get a new coach
It will depend on how the 4 occur and with whom

A player's dad posted a pretty damning indictment of Sumlin on 247 this morning.

Well boys, it has been a good run, but all my contacts are not longer with the team. Soooo, this is my last Bean Bit, and it is only one Bit.

Seems we could all use some good news, so hopefully this will help.

Keith Ford was the best RB for the Ags last year. My guys tell me that he is fast and runs very hard. They would joke that you better bring all you got against him or he would embarrass you. The players have a ton of respect for him because he did not take practices off and took pride in playing scout team. He of course won the scout team award as a result.

Should see much improvement at RB next year. Carson is a warrior, no knock on him, but he was one dimensional and an average pass pro blocker too.

On a few other notes, here you go (these are more my opinion but based on feedback from players and some of their parents); some of this is old news, apologies:

I have turned on Sumlin for a few reasons, many already discussed here; examples:

Allen played hurt against Ole Miss (he took the needle for the first time just to tolerate pain). Sumlin hung him out to dry and then did not defend him post game by admitting he was hurt and was a great teammate for battling as best he could

Season went south from there as the players were confused by it and he lost a good portion of the team. Allen was pretty much gone right after that and it was not a big secret in the locker room. I still have no clue why the lack of respect for Allen and the treatment he got from his head coach. Interestingly enough, the players were pissed he did not put Jake in Anal Spelunker because Jake had actually been out playing the other two "5 Star" qb's in practice. Defense was balling out, and felt like head coach did not play to win.

Sumlin has also turned into a difficult guy to like. He does not always treat people with the respect they deserve and it is getting old. I am talking about former players and families. If you wonder what I mean, a good example is the press conferences. It is downright painful to watch Sumlin and his condescending attitude and evasive nature. Compare that to Chavis and will see what I mean. People look forward to his press conferences, and he treats people with respect when the camera is on or off.

Bottom line is A&M deserves better from their head coach. We deserve someone he is happy to be hear and busting their tail to move us forward. I do not feel we are getting that at all.

Another example. When teams have three weeks off before a bowl game, the good coaches draw up new wrinkles in the play book, some really innovative stuff. It is part of the fun of watching bowl games. Briles basically put in a whole new offense for his bowl game. Kliff brings new stuff every week. These guys are engaged and flat out coaching.

What was our wrinkle? Having two backs in the backfield and running one in motion before almost every play. That's it. Think about it.

Finally with Sumlin (and Spav), the hard headedness is remarkable. The very first game of the season we ran zone read on every 3rd and 4th and short, and every time we did not account for the offside DE, and every time he would crash and make a tackle for a loss.

Now think back to the rest of the season. We still ran that same freaking play on every 3rd and 4th and short and the same freaking DE made the same play. Pitiful, and it killed us this year. The inability to convert in short yardage was a killer.

Another coaching mistake, B Will was by far our best RB last season and we desperately needed him to get some reps once White went down. Harvey stepped up at CB and we could have gotten Williams involved on offense. B Will had an awesome Spring at RB and was a game breaker with his speed. Have the balls to make an adjustment and put our team in the best position to win please.

Sumlin also just isn't the hardest worker. His effort on the recruiting trail leaves much to be desired and he is seemingly enamored more with his celebrity status than success.

On a plus side, we have a very good special teams coach and our DB coach is doing great now that Chavis has come in. Our defense will be stout next year, even with thin LB's

It has been a pleasure providing the Bean Bits, time to turn it over to the pros for now.

I think the handling of Allen's injury is the one thing that everyone can agree was completely mishandled. Have not even heard a glimmer of an excuse as to why things went down the way they did there.

Freeze

Do want. He would be my first and second call. He's very well paid, so we would have to offer him at least 6 Million to make the move worth it to him.
quote:

Patterson

He would be a candidate, but towards the bottom of the list. Very doubtful he leaves TCU.
quote:

Herman

Do not want. He's gonna lose 4 games this year now that his schedule actually has some competition. Also, he is such a drama queen with the media. He may be a member of Mensa, but he sure is fricking dumb when it comes to going after the media.
quote:

Morris

Hometown hero. Has roots in Aggieland and is known throughout the state's HS circles. Let's see what he does at SMU. For us to hire him, he has to win at least 9 games this year and show he can produce a defense. If he doesn't, it would be real hard to justify hiring an 8 win coach when our very own coach just came in at 8 wins this season.

One candidate I would add to the list would be Justin Fuente. We can money whip VT anyday of the year.

I don't think Fuente will leave VT so easily. That job has low expectations and high job security.
