What defensive player breaks out this year?

Last year Donovan Wilson, and to lesser extents Watts, Daeshon Hall and Brandon Williams all broke out and stepped up. I expect our defense to improve upon last year (how much remains to be seen) and other guys to step up. Who do you think makes that leap this year?
I am hoping it's a linebacker or DT (Mack or Keke seem like solid bets) but I have to go with Nick Harvey. I think Chief's philosophy and our pass rush lends itself to success for DBs and Harvey has great physical tools

Too early, but what the hell: Tyrell Dodson. Return of the WC at LB.

If his endurance is up to par the obvious answer is Mack.
Based on what I've heard, the staff and in particular Chavis is infatuated with Dodson. He was a guy Chavis saw as a 5 star "must have" guy who he personally invested many months in. His skillset is comparable to a young Patrick Willis, and that supposedly is what Chavis thinks of him not random fans.

Interested to see what he can do. Hopefully they throw him out with the coverage teams early on.

I don't understand how he wasn't a consensus national top-50 guy.
It's not common to see a defensive player in high school who is the best player on the field every snap, but he just jumps out at you on tape. You don't need him highlighted before every play, he's just always where the ball is at the end. He had 26 tackles in a game last year.

Maybe smaller competition in a lower tier state kept him off everyone's radar. Whatever the reason, I'm glad we were the ones on him. Looks legit in every video.

He committed early and to A&M. If he would have committed later he would have been a 4-star, because he would have driven page hits.
If he would have committed to the Sips or Bama he would have been a 5-star cause he would have driven subscriptions.

From PFF/Texags:
quote:
* A&M CB Nick Harvey played 446 snaps last season (three fewer than starter and 3rd round pick Brandon Williams). He allowed just 30.8% of targets into his coverage to be completed, the best rate in the nation. Half of the completions against his coverage were on WR screens.

i agree with alaka having a breakout year.
mack is the obvious choice, but i wouldn't call anything he does as a "breakout". if he dominates the hell out of opposing olinemen, then it's just expected.

1/4 of the way through the season, would it go...
Claude George
Nick Harvey
Reggie Chevis

Not looking good on my pick.

Breakout probably isn't the right term because he was already a top player on D, but Justin Evans has turned it up another notch this year. I've seen things from places like PFF saying he could be a first round pick

I've been impressed as well. Glad hes having a great year. Kept his word to us and his CC staff, and is seeing the benefits of it.

I would add Shaan Washington to the top of that list.

Shaan has been good and I thought about including him, but he was #2 on the team in tackles last year. So it's hard to qualify him as "breaking out"

I think he qualifies. Nobody saw him as a standout coming into this year like they did with Wilson, Evans, Hall. And Garrett is just on a different level. We knew the linebackers had to step up and he's been the most important guy in that happening

For me it is Shaan Washington and Reggie Chevis as the surprises so far. Neither had any buzz from even Aggie sources coming into the season and Chevis had already been written off by everyone as a total bust.
