What are your expectations for the program?

We are all in agreement that Sumlin should be fired but all this talk got me thinking. What are the expectations for a coach at A&M?

For context, here are the stats for the program since 1992 (the last 25 years and fairly widely considered the modern era for several reasons)

198-113 Record (.636)
3 Conference Titles (all in the first 7 years under Slocum)
Avg. Record (7.92 -4.52) so 8-5 or 8-4
5 seasons with double digit wins

I think my expectations are basically 9-3 or 10-2 essentially every year. So with bowl games, 10+ wins ever year. Every 3-4 years, I expect to field a team that could compete with Alabama and potentially win the West and make the playoff about 1-2 times a decade. I think we should win a conference title at least once every 10 years. I also expect to beat Arkansas every year and LSU at least once every 2-3 years. What say you? Am I asking too much? Too little?

I expect more misery.

Haha maybe the wording should be what kind of performance would lead you to not want the coach to be fired. I "expect" more of the same in all honesty.

We have an over-inflated opinion of ourselves in general; my expectations are 8-4 as always. But potential != expectation; we have the potential to do the same thing that Clemson did. But it's not going to happen until we find a coach that is capable of it.

At this point I'd be happy with a former BCS bowl or better every four years.

A top 25 program should be the norm rather than the exception. That's the minimum expectation.

My expectations of how it is going to be or how it ought to be at a Texas A&M? Because I can tell you they are different.

I expect us to go hard after top coaches and not settle, and I expect us to pay top dollar for them and their staff to avoid what happened to LSU last year.

Outside of that it's in God's hands. I just want us to try our best every cycle.

Expectations.

Minimum regular season wins: 8
No more than 1 home loss in any season
No embarrassing losses (blown lead of more than 14 points in a half or loss by more than 6 touchdowns is an embarrassing loss)
Steady improvement year after year
Ranked in the Top 25 at season's end

With our facilities, resources and recruiting base I expect to be a consistent national top 10 team and competing for conference titles regularly.

Anything less is excusing underachievement IMO. There is NO reason we can't be what Clemson is now.

Interesting, I don't know if it's a generational thing but I don't place any premium on winning at home vs on the road. I just care who the opponent is.

Slocum lost like 4 home games in the 90's. Kyle used to be a place to be feared and that was with 30k less fans.

We should be in the SEC championship once every 3-4 years, and considering there's no power in the east, winning 75% of those games.

Nobody, not even bama, should beat us 3 times in a row, and especially LSU.

We should expect to win a game where we're up more than two touchdowns after halftime.

We should expect to have win 85% of home games against SEC/FBS competition.

We should NEVER, EVER be embarrassed at Kyle field, ever. (Losing by more than two td's.)

We are in the SEC, we should be the first school a texas kid thinks about if he want to play serious college football.

Because you've never witnessed a wrecking crew do its job. We haven't had one in 20 years.

When I was a student, A&M lost 3 combined home games...none after my freshman year.

The home win streak that continued after I graduated consisted of the following wins:

1996 Oklahoma: 33-16
1997 Sam Houston: 59-6
1997 USL: 66-0
1997 North Texas: 36-10
1997 Iowa State: 56-17
1997 #19 Oklahoma State: 28-25 (OT)
1997 Baylor: 38-10
1997 t.u.: 27-16
1998 La. Tech: 28-7
1998 North Texas: 28-9
1998 #2 Nebraska: 28-21
1998 #25 Texas Tech: 17-10
1998 Oklahoma: 29-0
1998 #13 Missouri: 17-14
1999 Tulsa: 63-14
1999 Southern Miss: 23-6
1999 Baylor: 45-13
1999 Kansas: 34-17
1999 Oklahoma State: 21-3
1999 #5 t.u.: 20-16

During that stretch, the Aggies allowed more than 20 points TWICE.

No four year class should have double digit losses given the resources they are afforded even playing in the west, one of these years they'll stumble on to a coach that can actually take advantage of said resources and win a NC, just hope I'm still around to see it

I don't really give a shite if we go 10-2 every year and our 2 losses are at home. They all count the same.

Been covered by most of the other posts but I'll piece together what I think:

-Ranked in the top 25 at the END of more seasons than not.
-competing for (maybe not necessarily in) or in the race for the SEC championship game mid season in at least every 3/5 years.
-no embarrassing losses (i.e. 59-0, giving up 34 point leads, etc)

I don't know that I would say we can't lose X amount of games in any given year. We certainly should be playing for a bowl every year so I guess that is 6 wins minimum. But I do acknowledge that most programs outside of Bama and Ohio state, will have rebuilding years or a young roster every now and again, and a 7-5 season might be acceptable if it's sandwhiched by 9-3 and 10-2 or something.

rebuilding years

This is a fallacy that bad recruiters and bad coaches push on us that we accept. There's no such thing as a "rebuilding" year.

You've got talent in and talent out, if you can't manage the balance and conditioning your young players enough so that they're ready when the time comes, you shouldn't be coaching.
