Nothing to do with Sumlin. Everything to do with media.

Say what you want about Notre Dame being overrated, this was a signature win for Texas. They took our awesome finish over a ranked team and one upped it, on national TV, as the only game everyone was watching tonight.

It was a signature win for sure, but everyone gets regency bias. While I think that Kizer kid is a boss and Notre Dame is a 10 win team, they might not be, and the win won't be that impressive. When it comes down to it, the games in November are the ones you remember. So there still is a chance for them to fall on their faces.

quote:

Kevin Sumlin had a chance to bury them and own this state for a long time after 2012 and blew it. Now, they have life and are figuring it out. They took recruits we wanted as a 5-7 team, if they start winning 8-10 it's over unless we do better. The media machine will pump this up and absolutely beat the "Texas is back" horse to death. We can't compete in the media, so the time is now. This year. We must start winning at a high level. 10+ wins. Anything less simply won't get it done.

Agreed.

quote:

Texas schedule is incredibly weak. They have four games left they could realistically lose if they play like this on offense all year. Even at 8-4, Texas will crush is in February if we only win 8 ourselves.

Agreed.

quote:

Sumlin could have had a buffer zone had he taken advantage when they were wallowing in ineptitude. Now, he's reached the point of having to do what is realistically unlikely to remain competitive in recruiting.

There's no more excuses, for the future of our program we simply can't afford to make them anymore. We can't rationalize 8 win seasons anymore unless we want a repeat of 1999-2009.

I agree with this to a degree, however I think with the SEC, the dynamics have shifted permanently, and we won't see a 1999-2009 era again. That's not to say we won't peddle in mediocrity for a time, but we do have different dynamics now that we can turn in our favor. I agree with the overall premise. We either nut up or shut up for a while, especially since the talent falls off considerably next season.

LOL. You of course don't see the differences in the two situations?

It's not great for us, that's for sure.

Sumlin failed to capitalize on 2012 and we are staring a terrible season next year in the face while they'll be going the other way. All we can do is do as well as we can this year to minimize the damage as much as possible.

That said, we were recruiting against LSU, Baylor, OU, and TCU while UTw was down. Now that LSU is finally nosediving for having no QB and Baylor got taken out by UTw's media refusing to let Rapeman Briles get away with his Thug Recruitment Program, we're going to be trading the guys we formerly lost to LSU and Baylor to UTw. In a silver lining way of looking at it, that's a draw.

BUT, for y'all saying "yay now Herman won't wind up at UT!" Hold on... so he doesn't go to UT? LSU wanted Miles fired last year. Now it looks like playing football without a QB is FINALLY going to catch up to them. What keeps THEM from landing Herman? That's worst case for us. An 8-9 win UT beating us for recruits and a Herman LSU competing for Natties and skulldragging us for recruits.

Like the other poster, I too would appreciate being directed to the documentation.

The worst case for y'all would be if Houston gets a Big 12 invite (keeping Herman) and Texas starts winning again, TBH. That would also hurt LSU. Nobody wants this.

Texas boosters were absolutely all in this last recruiting cycle buying talent for the next coach.

I think you are misting a comment about Allen and LAST years running game as criticism of the UCLA game. Simply not the case for me.

This would actually help more than hurt by keeping Texass in check.

If texass gets good again(which isn't happening with strong as coach) the worst thing is a weak big 12

I don't care, that shite happens at every P5 school. If Texas outbid us for talent that's on our boosters for being pissy and not seeing the wisdom of supporting the program and not the coach.

There is way too much worrying about what the horns are doing. They should have a good program and will always draw a lot of good players. They just need the right coach and staff.

Just a matter of time before they get a consistently good team again. They now have a frosh QB that can actually throw the ball. I am amazed it has taken them this long to get somebody that can actually pass.

We just need to take care of our own business and win games. We also need to get back to consistently getting more of the top recruits out of the Houston area.

We should be consistently good and they should be consistently good. More than enough players available across the state to choose from.

Agreed. All the history of "we can't be good at the same time" comes from an era when we were in the same conference. The state population is booming, there is no reason both Texas and A&M couldn't have top ten classes both if we could shut down the borders. UF has been good the same year as FSU or Miami for example. Lots of talent to go around, and LSU and Bama have hurt us just as badly for stud players recently.

Plus Charlie beat a good team last year (OU) and it didn't mean anything. I will wait to see how the season goes, he smells like a loser to me so I will be happy if he gets to eight wins because of this weekend.

I panic when either OU or LSU announce Tom Herman as a head coach because that would actually trainwreck our recruiting. Short of that we can still control a lot of our destiny, and if LSU strikes out on a replacement (likely given their AD is a joke) we get even more wiggle room.

If we could collectively place Hamm, Liucci, Ketchum, Suchomel, and Chip Brown into the center of an active volcano, I think the state would be better off.
