Isn't there some sort of cstat city wide ordinance that bans the use of orange for businesses?

For instance, aren't all of the whataburgers maroon instead of the traditional orange, or something like that?

IIRC, all businesses that have orange as their primary color have to have a maroon accent somewhere plainly visible on the outer facade.

For example, one of the stripes on the iconic Whataburger roof must be maroon instead of orange, and the Home Depot in town has maroon awnings over the front doors.

Yeah, all the Whataburger's have their usual orange and white stripes but they all have at least one maroon stripe with an A&M logo on it.

CStat kind of makes Columbia look like a major metro area with nothing but ranch land for miles in every direction. But hey, the town orbits around the campus so if you're student it has everything a college student needs with major cities only a couple of hours away.

Yeah I'd always heard something like that but never knew if it was in true. Love it.

Are counting Bryan too? BCS is just over 250K. Its not Houston, but it can't be much smaller than Columbia. You need to check out their downtown. Brauhaus Bavarian Restaurant for din (German) then Murphy's Law for drinking (Irish Pub). Its a nice change of pace from Northgate. And if you REALLY want a change of pace Halo Bar is a few doors down. Their drag shows are something else... so I hear.

The city proper has about 130k and its metropolitan area has about 800k.

There's nothing wrong with it, CStat has all the big box stores + it's own unique stores and restaurants. But, as a student, without NG or downtown Bryan there isn't a whole lot to do.

Doesn't ban orange but it must be below the maroon, go look at the CS Home Depot, it still has it's orange stripe around the top of the building but it's below a maroon one.

ETA: that barn has been like that forever the class dates change but the barn stays the same.

Just a quick look at how the census defines the metropolitan area shows that it does cover a big swath of SC (larger than I thought), but it might be an accurate reputation. Not a lot of people actually live in the city limits but a lot of people in the surrounding counties and towns work in it. (including a good many USC students who have off campus housing that are officially in other city limits)
