I've been very impressed with Dolezal these past two games. Granted, it hasn't been against the best opponents but he's still been kicking some arse.

Christine Michael had it all, but he was an undisciplined primmadonna who wouldn't pass block or listen to coaching. So if we're talking physically and measurably who was our last premier back, it was Christine Michael. But he wasn't trusted so he wasn't fully utilized and he didn't listen, so he didn't develop.

Yesterday during the broadcast, they said his nickname was "The Human Victory Cigar." Boor bastard. Commentators are referring to him as th victory cigar on national television.

I like Carson, but he is not the type of back you want taking a majority of the carries.

We desperately need White to get healthy and be productive.

Exactly.

Unlike another poster on here who seems to hate his guts for some reason, I think Carson is a pretty good back for a 'thunder-and-lighting' tandem RB system. We just don't have the other back to make the tandem right now so he's valiantly doing it all himself, with the kind of results you'd expect from a non-feature back type-guy who is missing his counterpart. I give Carson credit for being a fricking man about it though. His effort is appreciated.

Let me clarify my original post. I am impressed with Carson because I (we?) had him pegged as a short yardage back who only scored 5 TDs in 124 carries last year. He doesn't posses high end speed, agility, or is a threat in the pass catching game.

Well so far this year he's looked faster, shown some moves, and has already caught a pass for a TD. He's a clear giant leap down from Chubb and his ilk, but I think he's going to produce as well or better as any of our recent more talented guys like C-Mike, Trey Williams, and Brandon Williams.

Yeah, no freaking way is he a Cyrus/Michael all-around guy who we should be using like we are using him. He doesn't have a higher gear. He should be paired with a speedster, like Trey Williams (if Trey had ever bothered to pass block that is). It's not an ideal situation or 'the way of the future", but he's carried the weight so I have to salute him, personally. Next year we'll have Ford.

Yea its unfortunate the year we choose to get serious about running the ball, our RB situation turns out this way.

I was pretty surprised White didn't play which makes me wonder if his injury isn't a bit more serious than originally thought. I bet he is back by Arkansas but it would have been nice to get him some game reps against Nevada.

Also, I am surprised Dolezal and Etwi didn't get more touches because I do not see us going through the season without needing them to get some carries.

Think this was just caution. If they were experimenting against Nevada, then they needed to have Carson in there to see what he could do in their various test cases. Cause he's going to be one of the horses in serious games.

Dolezal is quietly averaging >5 yards a carry so far

We more than over 6 a carry and ~140 a game?

Arizona average 7.0 ypc vs Nevada. Their run defense is not very good.

I don't want to come across like I hate Carson. He's not a liability at anything. He's just not particularly good at anything either and he needs to start finishing runs. Turning sideways every time he gets hit leaves tons of yards on the field and makes him exceptionally easy to tackle. A back his size you would expect him to break tackles but he never does and this is why.

Haven't had one in awhile and as long as we are an air raid team we won't get another

There's not really any reason we can't have an elite back. Many NFL teams even use RBs exactly how we do. It's like saying we can't bring in elite TEs but I'm already fairly confident Jordan Davis is going to be playing on Sundays.

We've just done a fairly poor job of evals on RBs from RC to Fran to Sherman to Sumlin. For whatever reason, we keep going with flash. A perfect example of our history here we passed on Jonathan Williams out of Allen for Trey. Trey was exciting but JW is elite. That was on Sherman. We passed on Perine from Pflugerville. That one is on Sumlin.

There have been some really good backs that have come out of Texas the last 5-6 years and not one of them was a 5-star. You may have to go back to Peterson to find a 5-star back that lived up to his potential. Not Brown at Texas. Or Gray. Or Trey Williams or Michael at A&M. Not Brandon Williams at OU or A&M. Not Seastrunk at Oregon or Baylor. Some of those guys had decent careers but not one of them was special. Most went undrafted (5-stars are supposed to be 1st round picks).

More of a perception thing, an elite back wants to play and when you sling it all the yard on every play he isn't going to get the touches he wants is all. Not knocking anything.

So basically Trey Williams screwed up leaving a year early?

I will absolutely never criticize a RB for "leaving too early." Running backs have such short shelf lives in the league.

ETA: Not saying that you are doing that by the way

considering that he went undrafted and didnt even make Washington's practice squad I'd say that he did make a mistake leaving too early.

Trey screwed up by thinking: "I'm mister flash! I don't have to pass block; that's beneath me!" I don't think it would have mattered when he came out. He wasn't flashy enough to make an NFL roster without being able to block or make big contributions on special teams.

I generally agree with your statement but I think Trey was the rare exception. His stock had a lot of room to rise and he was going to have a great opportunity to play a bunch if he improved certain facets of his game. Hindsight is 20/20 though
