If we can pay 1M, let's go get Meacham.
I don't think Sumlin can get that kind of budget though. Not after this season

Meachem would probably be my first choice. All three of those that I like would be very pricey (and two aren't even available right now). I am very interested to see what we want to spend on an OC because I feel like we want to protect ourselves on buyouts since the OC would go with Sumlin

Yep. Replacing a coordinator to save your own skin rarely works out, but Sumlin did just that last year so I have more confidence in him than most to find the right man.
I know what Sumlin was thinking when he hired spav. Spav is by far the best recruiter on this team. He has brought us household names at QB and WR, and Sumlin needed an elite recruiter badly as Beaty was not going to be around forever.
And that's the unknown - Sumlin MUST have a top recruiter at OC or we are doomed in the long term.
Speaking of which Beaty is never going to make it at Kansas although it's doubtful he would consider a return until he was actually out at Kansas.

Someone on Premium started a thread. I legit wanted to post a flaccid penis as the first response. I hate our fans sometimes
I think it was CO-OC that doesn't call plays and QB coach, but still. I had an aneurysm

I think a big sticking point for me in this search is someone who will stay here for at least two years. Is it worth going out and getting a super hot name if they leave for a HC gig after year one? We need stability.

We need to for sure axe McKinney and get an ace recruiter as RB coach. That's always a spot you see top recruiters at on staff.
Meacham has coached OL, QB and WRs. I'm pretty sure Wilsons background is all OL and I know Holgo has coached QBs (thinking as far as where our other openings would be on staff)

If you have your AARP card then yes you are older
And I was only kidding about the wiser
But
Big Red is still awesome

Yeah that may be the answer. Sumlin has always had a lot of loyalty to McKinney.
A family member of mine is in the coaching world. Used to work for Slocum at A&M, coached for Briles at UH. I remember when McKinney was our OC for a brief stint, my family coach said he was absolutely shocked. He had worked on a staff with McKinney and was just shocked. I thought that was very telling.
But Sumlin has nevertheless been loyal to McKinney even though he doesn't really fit with what we are trying to do.

Yeah, and I could see Holgorsen getting another HC gig if he's fired at WVU.
We need to choose a direction and go with it
Keep going toward more power and run based:
Wilson
Mazzone
And probably keep Christensen as OL coach
Go back to full blown air raid
Holgo
Meacham

I like the supposed direction we were going with Christensen. If we can get the personnel, it obviously will make our offensive scheme a lot more balanced. Not sure you can consistently win in this league passing the ball 80% of the time.

Interesting Briles vs Sumlin thread on Texags right now
It's easy to forget Briles early years at Baylor, and a poster also pointed out (which I am sure we haven't forgotten) that Briles only has really had success without Nebraska, Colorado, and A&M in the conference.
Briles
2008- 4-8
2009 - 4-8
2010 - 7-5
2011 - 10-3
2012 - 7-5
Sumlin (in a much more difficult conference)
11-2
9-4
8-5
Projected 2015 if we handle Vandy is 8-4 + bowl

The trendy pick right now seems to be Noel Mazzone (UCLA OC, whose contract runs out at the end of the year)

I'm thinking our staff payroll jumps to epic levels this year
What's the most anyone is paying for a OC you ask? Can Cameron for LSU at 1.5 mm
This will be the LAST time but Sumlin will be allowed to spend whatever it takes to get an elite guy in the fold.
But he will be allowed to do it.

Why did McKinney hang around after being demoted back to just running backs? I always thought that was weird.
Agree that we need someone who can run plays and scheme well, but also recruits well. Basically the only positive thing you can say about spav is he has gotten high star players to come to A&M. Don't know if that's a product of him being younger and connecting better with high schoolers or what, but he certainly can't call plays or develop talent.
