Your math makes no sense. Paying two coaching staffs next year (the one we buyout and the one we hire) would cause us to spend more money in the long run by millions of dollars.

Not if we fire him after next year. If we end up keeping him long term then you're correct, but Sumlin's buyout drops by what we owe him in salary. If we fire him after 2017 we will have the same problem after next year with paying two staffs. Maybe the buyouts of the rest of the staff drop off more, but that can't be more than a difference of a couple million
That's why if the powers that be aren't confident we can be successful next year it's dumb to keep him. You're going to have to pay two coaching staffs at some point, whether it's this year or next.

Go fund me a new coach

Yeah Sumlins salary is a wash regardless of when we fore him. The new head coaches salary would be additional expenses. I don't know abiut everyone else's contracts and how their buyouts work, but I'm assuming we would be paying them a good bit as well as a new staff.

Right, I guess if they were unprepared to incur that expense this year then that would be why, and they want to prepare the money for a year from now because of the nature of the buyout. But acting like there's a huge difference in total money paid if we fire him this year vs next is incorrect. It's a meme a lot of our fanbase has been rolling out the past day or so.

It's not about paying 2 staffs. It's about how long you pay 2 staffs.
3 years if we fire him this year.
2 years if we fire him next year.
1 year if we fire him after 2018.
That's where the savings come in.

We owe him the money immediately. We aren't spreading the payments out. We don't have the option of paying his buyout over three years. Maybe we do with the assistants, but that savings can't be more than a couple million

Could we be waiting until after next Friday, when Colorado plays Washington? (McIntyre)

How does us firing Sumlin and staff affect CU? Unless there's a leak that indicates he has agreement in principle.

I bet we could negotiate payment ts over time if we gave more $$. 3 million a year for 6 years, he would probably take it.
Posted on 11/26/16 at 11:01 am to ShaneTheLegLechler
So if we buy him out, do we still own him for that time or can he get another job?
Posted on 11/26/16 at 11:03 am to Old Sarge
That's fine. Stability at least. But he better exceed expectations in 2017. I'm not optimistic
Posted on 11/26/16 at 11:05 am to AggieDub14
We guaranteed the contract so I assume he gets it all even if he gets another job, unless we negotiate that out in a settlement.

He should be mowing the lawn until his contract expires.

Yes, but the buyout is 3 years worth of salary.
It's not a meme that we save money by retaining Sumlin. It's real, actual dollars.

Unless Roger is right and we plan on making a public spectacle (which seems absurd), don't expect any negotiations. He has a fully guaranteed contract, there is no reason for him to negotiate.

The year that you don't buy out will be paid to him as salary next year, just not as a lump sum but over the course of a year instead.
If you fire him now vs next year, you're paying him 15 million dollars regardless. It's just a question of how you're paying it

Nvm I'm an idiot and not thinking clearly. It's still a question of 5 mil and whatever damage next year does long term

We didn't fire Sherman until 7 days after the t.u. loss.

Be honest, didn't most of you guys have A&M winning less than 8 games anyway?
I had then winning 6-8 games, after which time I wanted Sumlin fired.
I simply don't understand "But we were only expected to win 8 games" argument. It's a damning indictment that 8 wins was the expectation of our fanbase going into year 5. Sumlin is THE REASON we didn't expect anything more.
