Why do you support him? The biggest argument I've heard is he is a CEO style coach that lets his assistants handle the Xs and Os while he focuses on recruiting.

Well the $5 million man just completely whiffed on his main job. He doesn't coach, can't recruit, is a shitty leader, doesn't communicate, etc.

What am I missing besides the fact we owe him too much money?

i support him during the year because he is the coach we have.

I support the fact that he deserves one more year because he's earned that. But one more is all he's got and its all he's earned unless he wins either 10 or 9 with a few tough close losses to very good teams.

I support his firing after this year if he doesn't improve this team and our record

The fact that he has come close to matching The Great RC Slocum's win totals in a harder conference (aka the period we clung to during the 2000s)?

That thread by CGSC convinced me the problem isn't just Sumlin. Most of the problem is us.

The silver lining is our AD is now setup to be making over $130 million every year thanks to our constant delusions about being a football powerhouse. Maybe non-football sports can take the resources from that windfall and make us proud. The new AD is kinda a rockstar so we will see.

the big question will be, do we fire him if he wins 9 but loses to Bama, LSU, and Tenn?

because thats the equivalent of what we fired RC for

It is? R.C. Slocum went 6-6 in his final season, losing to:

Texas Tech after blowing a 17 point 3rd quarter lead

Virginia Tech in which we only allowed 13 points

Nebraska after blowing a 17 point 3rd quarter lead

Oklahoma State for the first time in our history

A 5-7 Missouri team the week after beating #1 Oklahoma

Texas by a score of 50-20.

Not even close to the same...and you and Pat claim that I distort facts. You flat out ignore them.

If that happens get ready for an Aggie Civil War. Some will want him fired, some won't. In the background will be the national media chiding us for EVER dreaming of doing better than a nine win coach. It will be brutal.

My personal opinion is no, you don't fire him. The mega boosters I know/know of would agree with me I am pretty sure. You never know though.

I'm down for firing him for anything less than 9 wins, which is non-trivial considering our schedule is hard as frick. If our aspirations really are a MNC, we have to get someone in who gets top 10 classes every year, and we won't magically haul in any more great classes after 3 straight 7-8 win seasons. I'm cool with going full Ole Miss if that's what it takes. If we got caught, well, at least we tried.

That is so unAggie it hurts.

The honest truth is that the best thing that could happen to us is Texas getting Herman and winning a title or some shite like that. Too many BMAs only care about us in relation to Texas, they are willing to let a lot slide when Texas sucks.

we absolutely cannot do this

SEC teams will not rat out sec teams, but we couldnt pull it off without getting major trouble from the NCAA after just one season, tu & baylor alone would be calling the ncaa daily until we were reduced to SMU.

Well I'm not sure how in the hell we will ever be any better than we are with Sumlin then. Is College Station going to become any more interesting? Is our history going to be any less mediocre? Will corps dorks stop looking dorky on national television? If the answer to these is no (which it is), well, we should probably step our bag men game up then.

Honest answer?

The only chance is Chavis becomes the first coach in a long time that is actually worth the money we are paying him, and our defense wins us ten games next year.

this and Mazzone fields an offense that can put up just one more point than Chavis allows

and its very possible

recruiting facts:

2010 3 - ESPN 300 Recruits. 3 4 stars / 14 3 stars
2011 0 - ESPN 300 Recruits. 1 4 stars (Kicker) / 16 3 stars
2012 5 - ESPN 300 Recruits. 6 4 stars / 11 3 stars

Sumlin Era
2013 10 - ESPN 300 Recruits. 17 4 stars / 14 3 stars
2014 - 10 - ESPN 300 Recruits. 2 5 stars / 14 4 stars / 6 3 stars
2015 - 11 - ESPN 300 Recruits. 2 5 stars / 14 4 stars / 9 3 stars
2016 7 - ESPN 300 Recruits. 12 4 stars / 7 3 stars

Record:

Texas A&M Aggies
2012 Texas A&M 11–2
2013 Texas A&M 9–4
2014 Texas A&M 8–5
2015 Texas A&M 8–5

Plus 3-1 bowl record.

Do I think he's ideal? No. Do I think he shite the bed this year with regards to the handling of the QB's? Yes, Do I think he is too loyal to assistant coaches? Yes.

But the end game is he has recruited better than any other A&M coach, and has most probably the best four year record when you consider we are playing in easily the toughest conference in the country.

Do I want him to do better? Of course!

We have progressively gotten worse over his four years with apparently a more talented roster. Not a good combo.

And I'm all aboard the "Sumlin won with Sherman recruits" train

I don't think anyone disagrees with you.

Hell I don't think anyone left over here is a "Sumlin Supporter." We all care too much about football to label ourselves that way.

But it is what it is. Even if we fire him next year we owe him 15 million in 30 days or something nuts like that. I don't have that kind of money, I don't know about you. We just have to let it play out.
