No one is happy about the new OC hire, but let's not go full Texags. This is the official FML the OC hire sucks thread. I will anchor other melt threads just FYI. So melt away.

I will start:

The best thing going for him has nothing to do with him. It has to do with the fact we do our best when it's least expected.

Terrible hire but he has to be better than Spavital right?

Maybe we luck out and win 9-10 games. Who knows at this point

Well, at least he has been around the SEC before and unlike Meacham, he has experience coaching QBs.

That's about the only positive thing I can find. After digging up on this guy's past, he runs a similar offense to what Spavital ran . Predictable play calling and dumbass short yardage plays.

From the Bruins SB Nation page
quote:

1. Inside run to the right
2. Bubble screen
3. Deep pass
4. Swing pass to a running back
5. Inside run to the left

Once you've memorized those, you are now officially qualified to serve as the guest defensive coordinator for the Texas A&M game.

We got a Spavizonne.

I wasn't going to melt, but then I found out we are paying him 1M a year. Let that sink in people.

If we don't win 9 games I have been assured Sumlin will not have a supporter remaining and will be fired. 9 is the threshold for us next year and apparently Texas' staff is being told 8 or your done.

I'm very nervous A&M, Texas and LSU will all be looking for a head coach next year. If that happens I think we should just make a play for Les Miles on the condition that he changes his offensive philosophy and hires an air raid/spread OC, and of course retain chief.

And from what I understand a three year contract.

There is no silver lining. There really isnt. Sucks to suck.

Yep. So if it tanks next year it puts Sumlin's buyout another 2 m higher. Wtf are we thinking.

I don't think we had a lot of options. We needed someone, Sumlin can't call plays.

Thinking about it there is a silver lining- thanks to cheap tickets this year I might get to see Myles Garrett more than I would have otherwise in his last year. When Herman goes to Texas we won't be able to get talent like that for a decade so we got to enjoy him this year.

Maybe we get lucky and Herman goes to the NFL right when Saban retires.

Of course the Big 12 GOR will end around then hereby ending our chance to change our program's destiny, but maybe we can have a successful year or two before the lights go out.

Melt portion: This is absolutely a lame duck hire.

Reasonable portion: It sounds like we really pushed for Meacham and were turned down for reasons other than money. Outside of someone like Bob Stitt, who could we have realistically gotten?

If something crazy happens, and we win 10+, is there a chance Sumlin goes to the NFL?

I'll be honest. At this point, with a whiff on Meacham, and another terrible contract for an OC who wasn't going to be retained at his current job, I think we need to move on from Sumlin.

And honestly, if Herman is going to UTx, I might want to take a run at Gundy. Whatever the case, I will be a huge fan of SMU next year.

Thing is, we're paying $1M to a coach who wasn't going to be retained at UCLA. Now he's getting a raise. I hope like hell he's at least bringing that OL coach with him, the one who steals all the recruits from this region.
