Looks likes Vennables (DC, Clemson) was a better choice than Sumlin.

I'm resigned to believe that for better or worse, Sumlin corrected a lot of our image, and for that, I will always be thankful. We were unfairly labeled as backwards and racist far too often, and Sumlin did a lot to make our brand a lot better. I am pretty resigned to believe that he won't ever break through in the SEC West without really striking gold with Mond, or some other lucky factor, but at the end of the day, A&M is better in some ways because of Sumlin. I think there is a really good argument to be made that Johnny wouldn't have been Johnny without Kliff Kingsbury, and Sumlin is the reason he was our offensive coordinator. As a fan, I don't want to flounder under Sumlin's leadership anymore, and unless Sumlin wins games he hasn't been able to win without Johnny, then it's pretty obvious he'll be gone sooner rather than later. Still, I will always look back on his time as our head coach with a lot of frustration, as well as a few positives.

This is truth. We have corrected a whole lot of negative attitude toward the program by hiring Sumlin and having some early success.

The lack of facilities was also a "black-eye" for the athletic program that was corrected under this regime, but they were still too slow to fix the Track & Field program. This hurt in the recruiting of "elite" speed (KD Cannon, Tony Brown, Kendall Sheffield, Kermit Whitfield, etc...)

Sumlin did a very poor job of replacing Kingsbury and he took too long to hire a new DC. He also hasn't been able to find recruiters to replace Beaty or Polian either. Losing 3 assistants to head coaching gigs really hurt this program, but they've made no moves to correct this within the athletic department.

We went from being a racist also-ran to an undisciplined "inmates running the asylum" also-ran.

Meh

Undisciplined compared to who? I think he's doing fine on discipline, and I've never once thought the inmates were running the asylum. We need LBs. Lots of 'em, and right now. And we need a coach who doesn't try to coast through November. The latter to me is the most perplexing thing. It's like he stops giving a damn come November 1, and I don't get it.

It seems Sumlin is good at getting the "no respect" buy in. As soon as we're respected our guys coast. He doesn't run a program capable of self sustaining drive throughout a season. The difference in 12 was just the amount of disrespect, and the fact he had an experienced, well coached nucleus that kept it together for the most part.

There is truth to this, but one is easier to overcome than the other, IMO.
