Many teams have talent, but very few have talent like LSU. Les Miles won because of his talent advantage and defensive coordinators like Bo Pelini and Chavis. If they make the right hire, they can be a perennial top 10 team again.

Of course, making the right hire is not a given.

I agree that Sumlin has done a good job improving the coaching staff. It may not have been as fast as some would like, but I think that part of why he's been able to attract coaches is because he allows them enough time and leeway to succeed or fail on their own merits.

Jumped over to the coaching changes board and was shocked at the amount of people that would love Briles at the helm for LSU. Is that a good pulse for how most people feel, or that like assessing the poli board?

I realize hes a great football coach, but I really don't think I could get over his past. Figured asking here would get the least volatile responses

Briles can't handle criticism. He would get roasted by the LSU fanbase at the first sign of failure.

I don't think so. Most people understand that Briles is untouchable. The majority of posters on Tiger Rant are idiots. (See how many have and will post threads about Sean Payton going to LSU for an example)

Turning this to look at us, I don't think Sumlin is who we want to be representing A&M, it's just not the right fit. At this point I'm not sure it is worth the gamble to start over though when we have the support staff that we have now. With a couple exceptions we have very good coaches. I don't know them all at a close level so it is hard to say if they are looking to get hired away but it seems less likely than our early Sumlin days where we had lots a lot of coaches (both good and bad) leave. Are things calming down at A&M and we can ride this out or do we draw a new hand like many of our conference mates? I think I'd stay unless we knew we had a true home run lined up.

So unsubstantiated rumors make him an unsuitable representative for A&M?

Gotcha. I figured, but saw a lot more positive that I expected.

If we do end up firing Sumlin, I would love to hire Miles on the condition that he turns his offense over to a spread/air raid guy and does not interfere. He really is one of the few guys that can go head-to-head with Saban in recruiting

I refuse to believe he would actually do that based on his tenure at LSU. They went through numerous OCs and their offense stayed exactly the same

I guess, but not really? I'm just not sure what to think. He ran an outdated pro-style offense and hired Cam Cameron to basically run the same thing. He has had variations on it, and it has always been run-heavy, but it's pretty much the same thing. How do we know whether anyone has ever really given him an ultimatum about his offensive philosophy? He was just stuck in the offenses of a decade ago, but there are a number of coaches who have seen the light and moved to a better scheme.

The entire program was dysfunctional and I blame that on the AD as much as anyone.

You can run an outdated pro style offense well - see Stanford and Michigan State. LSU never ran it well, even with a treasure trove of talent in 2013 and 14. They recycled OCs and the level of execution and style stayed exactly the same. Whether it was him dictating it or just making atrocious hires at OC over and over, it doesn't really matter

If we are going with the CEO who doesn't really leave his fingerprints on anything I'd rather stay with the staff we have.

Rumor has it that LSUs OL are talking excitedly about doing film study of the other team's tendencies for the first time his week. It's not that their scheme itself wouldn't have worked, it's that Les wasn't running a very tight ship and wasn't trying that hard. He was coasting on an incredible talent wave.

Like a man who knew he was going to get fired no matter what he did?

So LSU fans want Herman. They think a coach from U of H can come to the SEC and do well, but they always talk shite about Sumlin. Anyone else find this ironic?

I find this more than a little hard to believe. LSU's offensive woes aren't new. Has he really just been coasting all that time? And his offensive assistants just all went along with it?

It's silly propaganda that only the foolish media (and gullible lswho fans) will believe

Kentucky or Vanderbilt would be smart to go after Miles. The east has been down since we joined in 2012. The right coach could get the ball rolling and be winning the division within a few short years.

You KNOW SC fans wish they could make muschump disappear in a boating accident so they could get Miles right now
