I posted this in the recruiting thread but I figured it deserved it's own- I was discussing with a co worker yesterday the possibility of Kyler playing minor league baseball in the summer while still playing football in school like Russell Wilson did. Does anybody know exactly how this worked for Wilson as far as how much of the baseball season he played and why it's allowed by the NCAA?

Obviously I would prefer he play ball for us because 1) he's good and would be an instant impact player on our baseball team and 2) it would keep him on campus, but if it's a happy medium between him becoming a full fledged pro baseball player I'll take it.

in college I played as walk on for a D2 and in the summers, we played wood bat leagues. Hosted by local families, you travel like a short season minor league team. If I had to guess, I'd say that would be it

don't remember the rules and honestly paid zero attention to Wilson at NCSU. I mean, they are NCSU. I know they had to change the rules (the so-called Ricky Williams rule) in the past and they are, naturally, NCAA archaic.

But just around MLB, hitters generally play short season and then fall instructional league early in their careers. Top pitching prospects are generally shut down and allowed to pitch very few innings at 18-20. Because of this, it's harder for a hitting prospect to play college sports.

Anyway, I doubt anyone would want to invest a bunch of money in Kyler and then watch him get banged around in the SEC all fall. There are usually so many guys to choose from why take on that risk. And if they see Kyler as a true elite player, they will pay him not to play college ball. Kyler's future is probably in baseball. But he'll never get an NFL shot if opts for MLB now. Conversely, he can play SEC baseball and maintain virtually the exact same pace to the Show.

Interested to know how many baseball players, who played a full college career in football, made it to the Show?

not many that I can think of. Honestly the sample size on guys good enough to play college football and baseball is pretty small. Really the only one I can think of that played a full career that is still active is Jeff Samardzija who was a WR at Notre Dame and now pitches for the A's.

Henson left early correct? Samardzjia was a major freak show looking back on it. Dude is a #1/2 starter in the MLB and probably would have hung around as a WR in some NFL rosters. That's a really odd athletic skill set to have as far as playing WR and pitching

Gabe Gross is another guy who I think might have done it.

Drew? Not sure but he might fit. But he really didn't have much of a MLB career. Adam Dunn officially played for the sips though I'm not sure he ever saw the field. Jeff Granger got a cup of coffee but he didn't finish either (he quit football at A&M and was drafted after his JR year).

It's just really rare to not pick one sport or the other at some point. Jameis could probably do either but he'll never play MLB now. Joe Mauer was the Gatorade Player of the Year in football but was the #1 pick so he never played college ball.

Obviously Bo, Deion, and a few more did. But yeah, I'm not sure Samardzjia's not the best good college football player to ever play baseball. He's a crazy good pitcher and I believe he was an AA at WR.

Well Bo Jackson, Deion Sanders, Brian Jordan, D.J. Dozier, George Halas, and Jim Thorpe to name a few.
