I am having a discussion at work with 2 co-workers. I made the claim that if Romo was under center during Aikmans tenure that Dallas would have the same amount of Superbowls if not more. They are die-hard Romo and Cowboys haters, but told me that Romo isnt even on the same playing field as Aikman.

Any other die hard Cowboys fans think that Romo is just as good/maybe slightly better than Aikman?

If Romo had Aikmans rings would this even be a conversation.

I loved Aikman and the Superbowl wins, I just feel like Romo can make more happen. Not knocking Aikman at all.

Aikman had a better defense than Romo and the current O-line is probably right there with the 90s O-line.

Thoughts?

I don't know if I'd get into a heated debate about the QB difference. I think Troy, was a much more accurate passer.

As far as the O-Line goes, NO! That O-Line from the 90's, was one of, if not The, best Offensive Line, ever assembled. IMHO

I think Romo would have been as productive as Aikman. As much as we love Aikman and as good as he was he was not asked to be Mr all everything.

Tony gets a lot more credit for losses than he deserves, he's actually been a pretty great QB over his career. He's played on several Dallas teams that just weren't very good at A LOT of positions.

Troy is the better QB of the 2, but if Romo had Aikmen's line he would have won just as much. Hell Matt Schaub could've won with the rest of the Cowboy offense from Troy's era.

Aikman was a game manager, Trent Dilfer could have won them those rings

Romo is a choke artist

Dallas fricking sucks

It is funny you call him a choke artist. The numbers do not support that argument. Kinda like the whole 3rd and chavis deal.

One game. Yeah it was a playoff game. Yeah it sucked it happened. But he has also led 24 4th quarter comebacks and orchestrated 28 game winning drives in his career. He is actually one of the most clutch QB's there is.

Its night and day difference from that game then and the game now. It is really hard to compare QBs from different eras. Romo crushes Aikman in the #s, but I have a hard time putting Tony over Troy.

Loved Troy, but Tony is better.

Aikman had better teams around him, but Romo is more talented. Shame his prime years were wasted on some of the more horrid squads in franchise history.

Romo as QB during Aikman's tenure would have 1 more super bowl, imho.

This was pretty much my exact response to them. I feel like Romo is able to do more. Troy was more of a AJ McCarron type to me. Great game manager and accurate as hell, but so much talent around him.

Troy was definitely more than a game manager. He was a top notch quarterback. But he was never asked to throw the ball as much as modern QB's are. I think Romo would have won as much or more in Troy's shoes, not so sure of the other way around though. I don't think Troy had the escapability to survive some of the years that Romo has had to survive.

Who do you want late in a playoff game? The guy who won three Super Bowls, or the guy who thought spending the week with Jessica Simpson in Cabo the week before the playoffs (a loss, by the way) was a swell idea?

Aikman's best statistical season were his 16 playoff games. I don't think that can be overlooked. I love Romo, and I want him to win a Super Bowl more than any other player in NFL history, and I hate the "rings vs no rings" debate I think it should be left out of all debates between two different players, but it's the exact card I'm playing here. Aikman was great and at some point being the QB on that dynasty means something.

If Romo wins 3 Super Bowls, I don't think it would be a question, Romo is better, but until then, I have to give Aikman the edge. Hell. Romo might win 1 and we can revisit it, and I'll probably agree with you.

Neither were as good as Drew Brees in his prime. Or Tom. Or any elite QB.

Most recent playoff win was yet another Romo-led comeback. He's had a slew of them. One of the all-time. league leaders in that category.

Yeah, definitely gimme Tony Romo late in the game. Especially with some of Dallas' putrid teams over recent years. Romo gives you a shot.

ETA: And again, I love Aikman. He was one of my childhood heroes behind David Robinson. And of course his rings speak for themselves. Not taking anything away from that.

But looking at it objectively, all things equal, I have to go with Romo.
