I guess I missed that he was retiring.
Not a fan of Coach Fran. When he was at TCU, he tried to sabotage Patterson from getting the head-coaching gig. Told the committee that Patterson "wasn't ready" to be a head coach, because he wanted to retain him as DC.
Of course we all know how that played out.
It boggles my mind to see Baylor and TCU at the top of the heap in the Big XII. When I was a kid, it was Texas A&M and UT -- and occasionally Arkansas.
Talk about a power vacuum. I remember when Baylor was on par with Rice.
I still have the set of those old SWC whiskey bottles. Used to have them all in my room.

Ehh, that really didn't happen in most of our lifetimes until Grant Teaff retired in '92. Baylor was actually pretty salty in several seasons under him. He was 7-13-2 vs A&M. I'd actually say that back then I was generally far more worried about playing Baylor than Tech.
Rice was kinda sorta ok under Fred Goldsmith and Ken Hatfield at the very tail end of the SWC but from the mid 70s on they were pretty much terrible every year.

They have those on display at the Texas Sports Hall of Fame museum in Waco. They also have old Dr. Pepper bottles with the name of that years SWC Champion. Pretty neat stuff that no longer gets manufactured anymore.

That Baylor Bear looks like it is about to get raped.

A lot of good memories for those old days. And a lot of laughing at the Sips' expense. My all-time favorite has to be the Ron Weaver fiasco.
