Spreading the word from a premium thread at TA: it appears that E. King Gill was actually a West Point cadet and the original 12th man, a long West Point tradition. How the hell this happens in 2014 I have no idea. Here's the article.
If you feel the need to contact the author (I did), the e-mail address posted is, surprise, ALSO wrong. The correct address is Sarah.Blansett@monster.com. You can also gripe to foxnewstips@foxnews.com. I think we should make this a thing.

I have no words, we need Randy Duke to set the record straight that the twelfth man was around before they started such a silly tradition.

So now even Fox hates us?

Here's the actual quote for those who are interested:
I mean, how many E. King Gill's can there be???
quote:
At West Point, there is a tradition of adding a "12th man" to the team. The tradition began in 1922. Afraid he might not have enough players to finish the game, the coach remembered that there was a Cadet in the press box helping to identifying players during the game. His name was E. King Gill and he was suited up and told to stand on the sidelines just in case he might be needed.
He never played in the game, but the notion of being ready to help your team was adopted by the student section and over time the entire student section was dubbed "The 12th Man." Additionally, the conductor of the pep band will paint his face with the number "12."

You didn't know? Most common name in the world behind Muhammad and Kim.

Emailed a polite requested a correction. Informing her that yes E King Gill was a cadet. But he was at Texas A&M. And that the Army Navy game is tremendous and has enough traditions to stand on its own.

You know comments were disabled because of the sip and seahawk trolls.
Also, I wonder what the ratio is between calm polite e-mails to her and angry e-mails.

Tried to email the address that was at the bottom of the article, but I got an email back saying the user does not exist. Comments are disabled, so I tweeted the Fox News twitter account per the websites instructions

Article has been fixed. No 12th Man references at all

I got the same reply as well. Form reply or not, it was nice for her to acknowledge the error, own the error, fix the error and send a reply to each person who wrote to her. That said, it's too bad writers don't do a better job checking facts in advance, especially for topics that aren't breaking news. I mean how hard is it to google E King Gill? Oh well, the important thing is the story is fixed. Thanks FF79 for bringing the article to our attention!
