Up here in MO

Dr. Loftin to become Mizzou Chancellor

Not sure how I feel about this, but I'm sad to see him go. Is he being forced out like some of the scuttlebutt I've read has said? Last I'd heard, he was planning to get back into teaching.

Sad to see him go.

I heard from my grandfather that the rumors of him being forced out are indeed true but he didn't hear who was doing the pushing. Take it FWIW.

That theory is popular on "another board," but I'd take it with a huge grain of salt, just like every other theory you see posted there.

I don't claim to have any inside info, but I doubt Perry was speaking in South Carolina Tuesday to campaign for Big Man on Campus.

Perry to TAMU President is almost as old of a rumor as Kubiak is buying a house in College Station.

In truth, Perry could replace Sharp but not Loftin. A President of an AAU school has to have the academic cred to back it up, meaning a PhD or some very extenuating circumstances. The President has to spend a lot of time keeping the faculty happy and a guy like Perry would never get an ounce of respect from them.

I do think way too many people just love to bash Perry unjustly. The man has done a LOT for A&M and it's hard to argue that Texas and A&M aren't in better shape now than in '00 even if he isn't the primary catalyst.

It's a tough hire. I just don't want us to get an Elsa Murano/Frank Vandiver/whatever type hire that is either incompetent or is a major culture clash with our school. A&M is unique and it takes the right person to guide the ship. I think we could afford to get someone who is more serious and academically focused and be fine, so long as they don't hate the Corps or don't give a damn about athletics. They don't need to be as vocal as Loftin but they also need to not try to reshape those things into their own "vision".

I never said Perry for president. I said the rumors were he was setting himself up for after he is out of office. I don't believe it for a minute just reporting what I hear at the barber shop and at coffee in the mornings

Perry as our President would be an embarrassing fricking disaster. Almost as big of a disaster as him being President of TAMU.

Off topic but has anyone else read the personal letter from Loftin in their email? He's the epitome of class

Let's keep the outright politics off the board or else it could get ugly fast (talking about Perry or whomever for President).

Agree. We do enough arguing about Billy Kennedy and I hate everything to do with politics.

for anyone interested:

To the Aggie Family

When I announced, in July of this year, my resignation from the presidency of Texas A&M University, I noted that my love for students is and has been my primary motivation. At that time a return to the faculty and to teaching and research seemed the logical path for me. Since that announcement I have devoted a great deal of thought to how best to continue doing what I love -- serving students. Recently, a unique and exciting opportunity came my way, an opportunity to continue affecting the lives and futures of thousands of students, not just a few dozen enrolled in the classes I would teach or working in the laboratories where I would do research. While it is very difficult to imagine ourselves anywhere else but Aggieland, Karin and I have found a new home with many of the attributes of Texas A&M. Today the University of Missouri System is announcing that I will become the 22nd Chancellor of its flagship campus in Columbia, Missouri. As a Fightin' Texas Aggie, a piece of me will always be here, and my love for this university's students will not lessen. We look forward to maintaining the friendships we have forged here while we develop new ones in the State of Missouri. I will be leading the oldest public university west of the Mississippi, a land-grant institution that shares much with Texas A&M -- a rich history, membership in the Association of American Universities and the Southeastern Conference, an outstanding faculty and staff, and a passionate student body and alumni. We wish only the best for Texas A&M and for its students, former students, faculty and staff.

R. Bowen Loftin '71
President

I met Loftin the first week of my Freshman year because he was cool enough to watch the women's soccer game with the freshman class at fish camp day. He always took the time to shake anyone's hand and say some words. Great guy
