When is it ok for people to start calling Chief out?
89 plays vs Miss St
82 in nickel defense
365 rushing yds allowed

Feel free to call him out. My concern is that we still have major issues in defending a zone read play.

When we have athletic DTs and SEC level LBs with size & speed and we still can't stop people. That's when.
We are below average between the tackles on D and across the board at LB. Suffice it to say that we don't think we have a single DT or LB that would start at Bama, LSU, and maybe Auburn. Not even sure we have a DT or LB that would make 2nd team at Bama or LSU. Think about that for a minute...
We need a major upgrade in talent & depth in these spots. MAJOR.

Well we need to hire someone to recruit those players because Chavis isn't doing it.

LB and DT are such huge problems that Chavis signed 1 LB and 1 DT last class

talent isnt the problem. look at auburn. mushcamp was widely regarded as the best DC in the country and auburn sucked last year, yet kevin freaking steele revived their defense with pretty much the same personnel.
chavis isnt terrible, he is just stubborn right down to the bone. hes the epitome of the adage "cant teach an old dog new tricks".
after sherman it seemed like we learned our lesson in hiring old coaches that had no pressure to succeed, i hope our next HC feels the same about his assistants cause chief is clearly coasting into retirement.

We're #16 in the nation in points per play allowed, which is probably the most important stat out there, so I think this is a little harsh.
I do feel like we are on the verge of falling apart again and the only thing keeping us alive are turnovers. Need to recover quick.

maybe he is, maybe not. one thing is for sure: our defense has gotten worse throughout the season both years hes been here.

It's not Chavis, it's our players. They are tremendous athletes, but they don't have the killer instinct.
We started recruiting those types of players, but many didn't make it into campus and we criticized this staff for the behavior of the others that did make it on campus and emplored the staff to get rid of them.
Meanwhile, Saban has kids with felony convictions and others with narcotics/drug arrests...nobody bats an eye. I saw Jeffery Simons, the 5* from MSU that assaulted a female earlier this year, making plays all over the field.
The other SEC teams have equivalents of hockey enforcers on their squads. Garrett is having the game of his life, so an Arky player ruins his season by going low. Knight starts running against MSU, so they drive him out of bounds and injure him. I would not be surprised if their are a few low tackles or headshots against Hubes this weekend from Ole Miss.

So we need criminals on the team to have a good defense.. Which guys from our 2017 class do you think fit that description?

don't we have nearly all 4 and a 5 star at those positions?

Just judging by what's in front of our eyes, and what has been in front of our eyes for a very long time, we have a linebacker problem. It also seems clear that Chief doesn't think he has 3 backers to put on the field at the same time on a consistent basis.

Unfortunately Baylor has the lockdown on that recruiting angle.

Looking at their 2017 class, Baylor recruiting doesn't have a lockdown on anything at the moment. They're gonna be screwed for a long time, and deservedly so

that tends to happen when you have paper thin depth...

Not in the two deep though.
Having a good defense is the glass ceiling of college football. Defensive players are easier to project and therefore the elite talent is more heavily recruited.
It is a catch 22 that doesn't just effect us.

Just finished re-watch of Miss State. What bothers me most - it was the LBs that were AWOL. It's as if we were playing with 9 players. I think he went Mustang at times just to take one of them off the field.
Chief hand-picked Dodson. If he's not a beast, then yeah we should all have problems with Chavis.
