Sorry if this has already been discussed.

What result of the ASU game would you need to see to feel good about A&M's chances at being a contender in the West this year?

Blow them out?
Offense firing on all cylinders with a competent defense?

Obviously one game isn't a good enough sample size, but it does set the tone for the season.

For me, I think it'll depend on margin of victory plus the eyeball test of our first SEC showing. Will try not to treat this game like the SC game last year if we win

Hold ASU under 400 yards of offense and under 20 points. To me, our defense will determine whether we are contenders or pretenders this year. Our offense can score points, but we need some damn stops

Just like USC last year, a blowout win won't guarantee anything. Even if we beat ASU we will have no idea how good they actually are. What if they turn out to be a 7-5 team? Or, what if they beat us but finish 11-1 and win the PAC-12?

Eyeball test is very important to me as well.

During the SCAR game I could tell that their coverage was very soft and the play of the backfield pretty awful. I just wasn't exactly sure HOW much that was playing into things.

After the game I called my brother - who has a great deal more experience and much more insight into the game of football than I, and some good contacts in coaching circles - and the first thing he said was that SCAR had the worst coverage he'd seen in a while.

So... I was optimistic after SCAR, BUT suspicious that maybe what we'd seen was just a terrible defensive scheme (an all out gamble to stop a Johnny-type player, really) and terrible individual performance by their players, which is what it turned out to be.

A win, plus the eyeball test for the defense. I think we will put up points as ASU blitzes their balls off normally.

I'm not going to attach yardage or point totals for the defense for what would make me feel good because if we get up and ASU dinks and dunks their way to some yardage and points late I won't be too torn up by it. I think after us watching the defense the last couple years we will be able to tell with our eyes if there's been real improvement. Less breakdowns in coverage, better fundamental tackling, better angles to ball carriers

The win is most important though

I agree that a blowout win wouldn't guarantee anything, but I think it would tell us more than the win vs. SCAR told us last year.

SCAR's big problem was they had virtually no film on Kenny, and chose to defend him exactly the wrong way. Going into this year's opener, there's enough film on Kyle to give ASU an idea of his strengths and weaknesses.

And I thing, more usefully for getting an idea of our true capability in the short term, will be the performance of the defense. ASU's offense is going to be good. Better than most of the offenses we face.

We win and are able to stop the run, when they actually try, and are able to shed blockers. And we don't have the secondary looking around in amazement after another blown coverage.

first and foremost, a WIN.

Being the first game of a Chavis led defense, this is a tough test for the Ags. ASU isn't a slouch, and if we win it's a great win over a P5 team.

I would love to see a stifling defense. That won't happen. I want to see a defense that can consistantly force the punt. I want at least 4 3 and outs. I want drives stopped on their side of the field.

I don't care about margin of victory. This game, for me, will be all about the defense.

WIN

The defense needs to look like a defense and stop ASU. I won't put numbers on it but I want to see good run defense and coverage that has a clue.

The offense needs to show me that all are on the same page and the ability to move the ball and score. Too, I want to see a slowed down ball control package that works if the situation calls for it.

Excellent point.

I want to see the O move the ball. I want to see the D get stops, limit the run game, and limit ASU's scoring.

Last year ASU averaged 36.2 PPG, 5.6 YPP, 4.2 RYPP.

Obviously that is one high powered offense. They only scored below 35, 4x last season with a low of 19 in victory vs Utah.

I want to hold them to around 26 or fewer, sub 5.0 YPP, and sub 4.0 RYPP.

For comparison, last year we gave up 30.2, 5.9, & 5.2.

SC definitely looked awful and lost, but they also looked just like any team I've watched get hit with a Mike Leach 2 by 4 for the first time. It's especially true for teams without the talent to press

I'm not looking for a specific result, number or whatever. Step one is win. Step two is finding out who can play. There are always young guys that step up when the lights come on. We, as a defensive unit especially, are going to have a steep learning curve. We need to find out who sinks and swims early.

I'd like to see a win, preferably by 14 or more and well in hand by the 4th quarter.

I would love a big win where we pounded the rock the entire 4th quarter.

Game 1.
Big Stage.
A Win is literally the only thing I care about. Get it any how, any way. That game sets up our season.
