An 8 Team Playoff Would Be Great For A&M

Now that we are in another offseason I have been thinking how badly our program needs college football to move to an eight team playoff sooner rather than later.

First of all that would be great for us because it would lower the bar for us getting in. We haven't been a top 4 team in my lifetime, but we get into an eight team playoff a few times in my lifetime.

More importantly it is obvious now that when we went all in on Sumlin in 2013 we burned more years off the Big 12 GOR clock than we could afford to burn. I still have hope the next coach can leverage the SEC advantage, but if the Big 12 crumbles and Texas or OU is in the SEC we are basically done for with nothing to sell recruits circa 2008.

An eight team playoff would stabilize the Big 12 for decades, giving us more time to find "the guy" who can leverage being the only SEC team in Texas into actual success.

College football is special because every single game matters. Every game feels like a playoff game. If you move to an 8 game play off, you'll have 3 loss teams getting in.

An 8+ team playoff ruins college football. Period.

An 8 team playoff would be great for the sport in general, not just A&M.

I agree with your reasoning, though. Hopefully we can leave the dark days of BCS bowls/musical chairs playoff selection committee behind soon.

False. Freaking cupcake games and the glut of bowls are the bane of this sport.

You'd have a ton of games mattering if P5 + 3 at large are in the running. CCGs matter. OOC would matter.

Hell, let the schools host the opening round. Those games would really matter.

That'd likely be a rare occurrence. Even so, give me a 3-loss at large bid who lost to 3 other teams in the playoff field by, say, a kick-six, a blocked XP, and a hail mary over what we have now.

As TBird said, it will help the sport because teams will be rewarded more for playing Power 5 OOC games.

But even if you are right- why should I the A&M fan give a frick about what college football is today? Right now it is a god damn caste system and my program is in the unclean caste.

Give me a "ruined" college football any day where we have a shot over what college football currently is where we only have a shot if OU, Texas and LSU are all down at the same time. I am sick of waiting for those stars to align, I would rather burn it down Trump voter style and have a sport I can care about more because my team (and every non-blue blood like my team) has a shot.

The best part about college basketball is the Cinderella and an eight team playoff adds that dynamic to this sport.

This is why we need real football, known as soccer, to become the prevailing sport. It's a better game, fewer injuries, a lot cheaper to field a team, and pretty much beats American football at everything.

So what does this have to do with a playoff? You're tired of losing so you want to pick up the board game and throw the pieces everywhere?

The cupcake games are also a separate problem and one that expanding the playoff doesn't fix.

There's a reason college football has the highest attendance of any sport. If we turn it into the typical "we just need to win more than we lose" type sport, the game will die. If I wanted to watch a Cinderella team or "best team at the end of the season," I'd watch literally every other sport.

It is not just A&M. Lots of non Bluebloods would have a chance. The game would be more interesting if teams like Boise would have been given a real shot when they were riding high.

I am someone who thinks college football is worse when only the blue bloods are good.

The average high attendance has little to do with blue bloods having a moat around them because most programs aren't blue bloods.

College basketball has a much more fun postseason- more fun than anything in sports. The only problem is it's basketball not football.

I think the reason college football has the highest attendance of any sport is because it's the most entertaining sport, period. No American sports league approaches the NFL in popularity, despite having 12 playoff slots for a 32 team league. And expanding to 8 wouldn't lead to "we just need to win more than we lose". The #8 seed this year would have Wiscy at 10-3.

frick yes. Duh.

Here's the funny thing about championships: after a certain while, folks don't care too much about the circumstances surrounding them. Just that you got it done. It used to be a meme about the Spurs' first championship having an "asterisk." Hear anyone say it now? Nope. They say Pop has won 5 rings. IDGAF if TAMU sneaks into the playoff as a 4 loss squad if they pull off a miracle and win it all.

This year, an 8-team playoff would look like this:

Alabama vs. Wisconsin

Clemson vs. USC

Ohio State vs. Oklahoma

Washington vs. Penn State
