"Jalen Reeves-Maybin said he's up to 217 pounds right now, and he feels like he's starting to get comfortable at linebacker. He said he's playing almost exclusively at Will linebacker."

- Callahan

quote:

*Freshman cornerback Emmanuel Moseley is getting some work with the first-team defense during the Vols' walk-through period. Coleman continues to work at nickel, where the staff would like to keep him. Moseley is still pretty wiry, but he's fast. D'Andre Payne, the other freshman corner, is working some at nickel, and he was with the second group on Tuesday.

quote:

*Fourth-year junior Kyler Kerbyson continues to work with the first-team offensive line at right guard ahead of Wiesman, a rising sophomore the staff really likes. At this early stage, it appears Tennessee has its top six linemen: newcomers Dontavius Blair and Coleman Thomas at tackles, Mack Crowder at center, Marcus Jackson at left guard, Kerbyson and Wiesman. Kerbyson has the versatility to play guard or tackle, which makes him a valuable player.

quote:

*At safety, LaDarrell McNeil, a two-year starter, is working alongside rising sophomore walk-on Devaun Swafford, who played primarily at nickel last season. Remember, sure-fire starter Brian Randolph is out this spring coming off shoulder surgery, and the Vols will add some nice safety prospects -- and perhaps a potential starter -- when some touted freshmen arrive this summer.

*The first-team defensive line was Corey Vereen and Jordan Williams at end and junior college transfer Owen Williams and Danny O'Brien at tackle. Ends LaTroy Lewis and Jaylen Miller also got some looks with the first group.

quote:

*Pearson, Marquez North and Jason Croom continue to be the three receivers with the first group on offense, along with freshman tight end Ethan Wolf. Justin Worley was the first-team quarterback during Tuesday's walk-through. Riley Ferguson looked sharp throwing the ball during the periods of practice open for media viewing.

quote:

"Most of the players have showered and headed home, and Corey Vereen is sitting in the end zone by himself doing crunches on a medicine ball. I really think that kid is crazy. His work ethic is unbelievable."

VQ Practice highlights

quote:

- Joshua Dobbs was the best quarterback in practice on Tuesday. The sophomore was the most consistent of UT’s four signal callers. Redshirt freshman Riley Ferguson was a bit inconsistent, as was often the case during preseason camp last season.
- Freshman receiver Josh Malone was a standout on Tuesday. Several defensive backs had trouble covering the mid-term enrollee.
- Once again Von Pearson showed his quickness and athleticism. The junior college transfer was able to get open often. However, he did drop some passes on Tuesday. - Owen Williams was a standout in UT’s first day in pads. The junior college defensive tackle was tough to stop throughout the day. - Freshman defensive back Emmanuel Mosley showed flashes on Tuesday as he saw some practice time with the first team. Mosley is raw but has shown potential..
- Sophomore Jason Croom was solid in UT’s third practice. At 6-foot-5 and 234 pounds, Croom is a different type of receiver than the Vols have on their roster. UT’s next biggest receiver is sophomore Marquez North, who is 6-4 and 221 pounds. Most are significantly smaller.

Speaking of Dobbs, I read this in an article a couple of days ago.

LINK

quote:

Q: Walk me through a typical day from the time you wake up to the time you go to sleep.

Dobbs: A typical day for the spring semester: Starts at about 7:00 a.m. with breakfast Class starts at 8 a.m. on Tues. and Thurs. and at 9 a.m. on Mon., Wed., and Fri. Classes go until about until 2:30 p.m. I squeeze in lunch Football film study, workouts, meetings, and/or independent throwing from about 3 until 7 p.m. After dinner, I complete the day at the Thornton Academic Center from 7:30 to about 10 p.m. Return to my room to finish homework and prepare to start the routine over for the next day I try to get to bed by midnight On some Friday's we workout early morning before class. The key is to have great time management skills.

Now we know why he doesn't have eyebrows. Trimming them was obviously too time consuming.

TSR on Jalen Hurd (3/14/14)

quote:

Running Back: For the first time in spring practice, Jalen Hurd looked truly special. He is still trying to figure out what type of running back he is. He reminds me of a young, talented rock star who doesn’t know what type of genre of music he wants to sing yet…but he will be famous.

He struggles with the slow zone-read handoff, which is much different than how he received the ball in high school. One thing that is evident with Jalen, however, is that no one wants to tackle him when he does have the football. There was a collision opportunity on the sideline and two defensive players turned it down in a full speed drill.

"Defensively, the Vols continue to explore ways to get Corey Vereen and Curt Maggitt in pass-rushing situations together. So much so, in fact, that the Vols are doing some early work exploring essentially a hybrid 3-4 type of defense with Vereen and Maggitt.

Owen Williams is a guy who's impressed earlier. And a team full of some notable work-ethic guys seems to have another one in Williams. Recognizing his conditioning is an issue, Williams has proceeded directly from the practice field to the weight room and then upstairs in the Anderson Training Center, where still in uniform from the practice field, Williams has immediately logged interval training work on the treadmill.

Elsewhere on defense, Jakob Johnson has moved into the second unit at middle linebacker and continues to be a player who looks like he'll be a factor on special teams. Johnson has emerged as a potential "shield" candidate on punt teams, which is a pet position of Butch Jones and typically reserved for linemen on either side of the ball."

Jalen Hurd, getting considerable work with Marlin Lane dressed but not participating after breaking a bone in his left hand, probably shined the most. On multiple instances, Hurd severely shook Vol defenders and also added a long, 24-yard run late in situational work. Additionally, Hurd plowed in for a couple of touchdowns but also was intensely instructed by Robert Gillespie, Vols running back coach, for not cutting more directly upfield on a couple of open runs.

:fapfapfap:

quote:

The Vols opened on offense with Von Pearson, Josh Malone and Marquez North at the wideout spots,Alex Ellis was first tight end but didn't play extensively. Alden Hill was the first running back with Lane injured, but Justus Pickett also got some work at tailback Johnathon Johnson got slot receiver work, but Josh Smith showed up with some big plays and eventually scored on a wide receiver screen. Jason Croom, who had a couple of drops, had a crucial block on Smith's TD.

Seriously though, if Ferguson or Dobbs really steps up at QB I think this offense is gonna surprise a lot of folks. Hurd is looking like the real deal and this WR group is a massive upgrade over last year's.

Jalen Hurd is MVP of VOLS so far

quote:

All eyes have been on the Vols’ talented early enrollee class, which figures to add immediate firepower to the arsenal. Among the 14 early enrollees is the school’s most hyped signee in five-star in-state running back Jalen Hurd, who suffered a season-ending shoulder injury last year in high school. The 6-3, 230-pound future star is already impressing the coaching staff a week into spring practice, according to Times Free Press. “I thought Jalen Hurd really started to run like we expect him to run,” head coach Butch Jones said after Hurd excelled in Friday’s scrimmage. “He still needs to learn how to get the ball north and south. I see our younger players starting to gain confidence in their style of play and our team style of play.” According to TNSportsRadio, Hurd was the standout player and the MVP on Friday before the Vols broke for spring break this week. “He is working himself back into football shape and there is a difference,” Jones said. “He hasn’t played football in a year with recovering from the surgery so each day of practice I see him getting better and better. I see the improvement coming but I also see the confidence getting in him as well. He understands what he needs to work on.” Projected starter Marlin Lane has been hampered with a wrist injury this spring, and Hurd has emerged to steal the spotlight thus far. Hurd has flashed terrific vision and the ability to make defenders miss in the open field, as well as toughness against would-be tacklers.
