First time I can ever recall something like this happening but Dave Hart has opened up a big enough can of worms that the legislature is considering a bill to make UT to apply the Lady Vols nickname, logo, and brand to all women's sports not just the women's basketball team. UT opposes it on the grounds that it should be left up to the school which in principle I agree with but in reality Dave Hart fricked up here and listened to Nike not the people (both sorely misjudged the brand). It's the height of absurdity that we only have one team dubbed the Lady Vols.

I don't like the idea of a bill that forces the issue but I do like the message it sends. They should be called what they want to be called not what Dave Hart or Nike decides they should be called.

Oh and no our state legislature has nothing better to do but given the other shite they pass this is a step up in productivity.

Seriously. The only person ruining the lady vols is Holly. We invented that sport and now we suck at it with her.

Firing Holly should be their next bill. Fo' shizzle. Dave ain't gonna do it. He just doesn't understand that what's happening is not acceptable at UT -- every other school it would be fine or even good but not here.

I really couldn't give less of a frick about the Lady Vols, their "brand" ( ) or the bulldyke reds that support them.

If they want to be called lady Vols, they shouldn't get any non-lady Vol money. We'll see how long they bitch when they're travelling to away games on Schwinns bought with bake sale money.

The only think I really care about in this is that it's COMPLETELY ridiculous that the state legislature has gotten invoked. Perfect example of how fricked up our politics is

Also, let them be called what they want to be called. Who cares, dumb thing to let get to this point

I agree, our legislature should be discussing serious matters and not dicking around. Then again our President likes to play golf and take vacations once every two weeks so...

That just seems spiteful to me since they're not asking for something new or even money just to be called what they've always been called. Also, you can't say 'well you don't get non-lady vol money' because Hart dissolved their dept and rolled it into the men's AD (it was one of the ways we fixed our men's AD - it helped the academic side of the men's greatly and cleaned some other stuff up as well). As for the name, I get that you think it's a silly issue but it obviously has the attention of two (male) republican state legislators and is an issue for a sizable number of people.

What makes the Lady Vols issue weird is that normally women want to get rid of the term 'lady' but in this case they want to keep it. That's where I think Nike fricked up -- they didn't realize that it had such a positive meaning for this program.

To me it's just weird as frick that we have the Lady Vols (basketball) and then other women's sports are just Vols.

Meh that's another reason Holly needs to go (she's not at all representative of the boosters/supporters). If you want to know who the supporters are it's really rich old alums. I've met some of their boosters and they tend to be wealthy bluehairs and also younger CEO types. Obviously they are collectively smaller in number than our football boosters but they are still rich as frick and influential in state politics and goings ons. Hence a bill like this even being considered.
