Few notes from scrubbing the interwebz:
Tuttle looks to be way ahead of schedule and was fully dressed and doing light work outs on the sideline today. Getting him back will be huge.
McKenzie dressed out and went through drills and is also ahead of schedule with his recovery.
Alexis Johnson definitely looks the part. He's huge to go along with Tuttle and McKenzie. Picou filled out a ton as well.
Picou and Darrell Taylor used that redshirt well as both guys look yolked from where they were last year.
Kongbo is down from 280 to 260
Austin Smith is being moved from DE back to LB (good move imo)
Trey Smith is already amongst the biggest players from any class currently on the team as a true freshman. Dude is an absolute monster.
Guarantano and Dormady both impressed. I think we're in good hands with either of these guys, but Guarantano has a chance to be special before he leaves here. Ultimately it boils down to:
The Cannon and the Legs(Guarantano) vs just the Cannon (Dormady) -- In this offense, I think the true DT QB
reigns supreme.
OL is stacked with experience and depth and will be the strongest position on the team. They know that not only will the offense lean on them for leadership, but the entire team as that unit is full of veterans.
Questions in the secondary. More so who gives us the best rotation as a lot of guys are fighting for their jobs this spring. New DB coach said everyone has a clean slate.
In a perfect (healthy) world the starters on DL look like:
K. Phillips, Tuttle, McKenzie, Kongbo
Guarantano throwing dimes
Guarantano is going to be a stud. (19 sec clip post practice) more specifically the comment that starts right around 13 seconds in :eyesemoji: :eyesemoji:

Thanks for all the info. I can't wait to watch Guarantano play. He reminds me a lot of Dobbs but with better footwork and a better passer of the ball. I think he has the potential to be our best QB since Casey Clausen/Manning. He just has the look of something special. I think Dormady could be successful here at UT but not with the type of offense we run. I have a feeling if Dormady does start it would be a lot like Worley in 2014, tons of read options that get stuffed at the Line of Scrimmage because the defense knew he was gonna hand it off 9 out of 10 times

It surprised me how good both of them looked given how early it was and that they're throwing to a lot of green WRs. I was skeptical of the Canales hire but I really like the way he coaches so far (it's still very early but the QB unit was organized and on point and Canales seems to bring some fire to the group).
I didn't see much of Coach Wells but the other new coaches brought a lot of energy and had their units looking impressive, especially considering it was practice 1. I'm cautiously optimistic about this staff. I think it's a good group and they look like they've already built some chemistry between them.
Oh and can we get Coach Beard another year of eligibility? His footwork is crazy good. Maybe we can slip him in a game or two.

GOod news I guess but we have heard all this shite before. I'm sick and tired of stories from spring/fall camp giving ridiculous expectations for guys
Also....
I understand the logic behind it but I almost puked at reading this, I may have oLine PTSD. Will believe it when I see it

I will say the interviews with Guarantano are really impressive, dude seems to have that "it" factor.

No problem -- We are lucky to have both and if Dormady ends up having to transfer for playing time I think he'd perform really well in the right offense. In a way it's shitty that he had to have Guarantano right behind him opposed to maybe 2 years behind him to give him a chance for serious playing time. The mods on VQ said Dormady looks good and probably has a higher floor/lower ceiling overall, but they said that they think it's going to be tough to keep Guarantano off the field. I guess we'll see.
Here's a picture of Picou and Taylor from yesterday's practice so people can see how much mass they added from the RS.
Picou
Taylor
Johnson, McKenzie, and Tuttle
Kongbo
Dormady
Guarantano
Prof -- Agreed on Canales. The little bit of tape that I saw on him looked better than what I expected.

Picou looks like he might need to get a size up on his helmet!

Lmao. He looks like a mean mf'er though. Hopefully he can step up this season. We need all the help we can get on the D-Line

Damn, Gitmo has put on some good muscle. I really want to see him start this year...
Posted on 3/23/17 at 11:16 am to VolInBavaria
Ditto that, people talk about being concerned about CB/WR but I think our most vulnerable/thinnest position is DT.
Posted on 3/23/17 at 11:48 am to BigOrangeVols
Man I hope Gitmo lives up to half the hype. Would be huge if Alex Johnson is even a decent DT.

His interviews get me pumped, he sounds like a pro already.

I'll just leave this here:
Hubbs - "Guarantano has made some plays with his legs as expected including one on Thursday that went for over 40 yards."

also that dormady has taken all snaps first 2 days with the starting center.

I don't think the snaps deal matters right now. It's probably more of a nod to seniority and an effort to motivate both Dormady and JG. They're both taking 1st team reps with the WRs.

Bigger excerpt from VQ:
Interesting that there's competition at Center. I know they've said Wells' line will likely be a more aggressive type of line which may leave CT out in the cold. CT is exceptionally athletic for a center but he's never been good at driving anyone back. Maybe Rock will help there but he's always been on the weak side, imo. I'd love to see Jack Jones there if he's ready. His attitude needs to be on that line but he does have some things that need developing in his game.

Everyone wants to know about the quarterback battle. The reality is that everyone expects it to be a long battle, as we have been saying since the end of last season. Through two days both Quinten Dormady and Jarrett Guarantano have thrown interceptions and both have thrown some great balls. Both have BIG-TIME arms and that's assumed to be a wash. Guarantano has made some plays with his legs as expected including one on Thursday that went for over 40 yards. Bottom line is that both have had good plays, some mistakes and both are settling in for a long battle for the job.
With Jauan Jennings missing some practice time, the opportunities have been there for the young receivers like Latrell Williams, Tyler Byrd and Marquez Callaway. With a lot of youth at receiver, the tight ends have been a big factor early. As we noted last week in the war room, offensive coordinator Larry Scott likes the tight ends and wants them more involved. Wolf said on Thursday that in 11-on-11 work, the tight ends have had 12-13 catches and only one drop.
On the offensive line there is going to be plenty of competition particularly guard-center-guard spots. That group has gotten off to a good start, but the test comes when pads go on. Line coach Walt Wells is driving home toughness and physicality. Its only two practices and there's no pads, but Trey Smith has done nothing to disappoint and at the tackle spot it's been a good start for Drew Richmond. Remember Richmond and Wells worked a lot together one on one the second half of the season so the Memphis native is very comfortable with his new line coach.

I'm all for a more physical line

Definitely agree. I prefer a more aggressive road grader type line. I miss the old OLs UT had under Fulmer that would push DLs back and open holes you could drive a Mack truck through.

We'll have to have physical lines if we want to be a force in the SEC again
