Something that isn't being discussed very much regarding the OL & DT rotation

stolen from a thread on VQ. This is another poster summarizing a recent segment Doug Matthews just did:

*Matthews is talking about Drew Richmond at LT in the first paragraph

quote:

After watchin' him some this past month, said he's the biggest individual plus-up coming out of spring ball for this team. Expects him to finally hit his stride this fall. That's huge IMO because he's one guy who can't disappoint this fall if the OL is to be the strength of the team as expected. Doug also said Trey Smith is the best OL prospect he's seen at UT....and that goes back to 1980....

He also said, for the first time in quite a while, we should be very strong & mature at the most physical positions (5 OL plus 2 DTs) which really gives us a chance to be good..... Plus, couldn't say enough good things about Rock....said the difference he is making in strength, physicality & toughness will be very apparent this fall....already is, in fact......

OL & DT rotation are loaded with talented upperclassmen.. That's huge in this league

Richmond struggled towards the tail end of the spring. Would not be who I would single out if trying to highlight the two lines. I do think they will be good but I think he is one of the weaker starters on the o line.

He is 100% correct about Smith.

Hopefully Richmond can fine tune some things over the summer. His trajectory seems to be better as of late at the very least. If he's the weakest link on this line (If Jashon starts at C) that's not a terrible problem to have.. I would think.

To hear that on Smith.. That's strong. Dude is a bull.

The state of Tennessee has been consistently cranking out some really talented big uglies on both sides of the ball for a while now. Love that these guys are staying home.

We need a tougher, more physical front seven and oline than what we had last season. Wells, Hoke, and Rock look to help us achieve that.

I hope we run more base 4-3 this year, but I kind of doubt it. We have some promising talent at LB at least.

I agree with you on just about everything.

LB has me curious to see what they do. Bituli is going to be hard to keep off the field. So is Austin Smith and Quarte Sapp.

I really like what what I saw out of Bituli in limited reps. Plus he has a MLB name. Smith has the measurables and the coaches need to find a way to get him on the field.

If OL and DL are solid that can make up for a ton of smaller sins in this league. The talent we have we returning is the most underrated in the SEC. For whatever reason, people are convinced that we're losing a massive amount of talent and have nothing behind it. Oddly enough, the class we're losing the most from was CBJ's first class and the lowest rated he's had but I think they've universally confused that first class which wasn't very highly rated and really was more of a get the best you can with a short amount of time type of class with his second class which was much bigger both in volume and in ranking and have also forgotten that another very good class followed that one.

However, I like the situation that sets up for us because expectations will be low and opponents will have a high chance of overlooking us. It also sets up this team to go an entire spring and fall being told how awful they're going to be and CBJ's teams have played best when they've played with a chip on their shoulders. Last offseason's high expectations led to a lot of players believing their own hype, imo. Even before the injuries set in, they were mentally soft as hell and lacked the edge they'd played with in years prior.

I'm still worried about RB depth though. CFA is not an every down back and Kelly is going to need help. Ty needs to play well immediately and I think he will but damn I wish he'd been an EE. Even though we should be fine numbers wise with the three RBs coming in I'd love for us to pick up a quality RB transfer over the summer. Having to rely heavily on the incoming true freshmen for depth isn't ideal at all.

Couldn't agree more

I'm not too worried about RB though as I think Kelly is gonna be extremely serviceable and a very solid back. After that we will figure out away to fill in the extra carries

Of course if kelly were to get hurt....

That's what I worry about. CFA is developing and improved his weight as well as his overall game over the Spring but he's not an every down back and still has a ways to go to reach his potential while Chandler and the others are true freshmen. I wouldn't feel at all good having to rely on CFA and three true freshman should something happen to Kelly.

However, I do think Kelly is a fantastic RB and will be a great feature back for us this season.

We've got some strong units like you mentioned, but the depth at RB worries me as well. We need Kelly to stay healthy and Chandler is going to have to have to carry the rock a good bit as a true freshman. I hope that he proves me wrong, but I haven't been impressed with CFA. He looks a lot better physically this year, but his vision and agility worry me. When Kelly is a SR next year and Chandley is a SO I think RB turns into a strong unit. There seems to be a lot of unknowns right now
