Shoop is still a top notch DC

I still think Shoop is still a top notch DC. We saw his abilities with a healthy roster and in-game adjustments early in the season and I think his resume over the past 5+ seasons says more than the debacle the end of this season has been. He is no Sunseri as many are making him out to be.

Everyone thinks he's a bust because our D has been soft as baby shite the last half of the season but I don't think he's at fault. From what I can tell our players seem to be in position to make plays a majority of the time but simply aren't doing so.

Why is it that after killer recruiting classes that we have a walk-on starting over the likes of Bates and Bryant? Why is it that our secondary sucks balls and we can't get a corner opposite Cam to save our lives? My personal opinion is because Thigpen, Martinez, and likely Strip are garbage at development. We even knew that going in, UGA fans told us how terrible Martinez was and same with Thigpen and Aubrun. So when we have a rash of injuries that decimate our starters there's absolutely zero depth, not because we don't have talented players but because those players have zero clue what the hell they're doing.

I'm still fine with Shoop being retained as I think he's a great coach, that said, this "BSIA" that Butch put together to aid him is hot garbage (as we all know). All three position coaches need to be shown the door and Shoop needs to be handed the keys to bring in his own guys.

D only cost us Vandy game, USCjr wasn't great but that was 100% on the Offense IMO.

But the question is why??

From all accounts Butch hasn't allowed him to completely take control of the defense so how can I blame him when he's not fully at fault? Especially when we have such lame-duck position coaches crippling him even further.

Meaning that Butch made him come in and adopt their terminology and adapt the current system from my understanding. I don't think Shoop was able to completely install what he was running at Penn/Vandy.

[Edit] Although, even if he had I still don't think it would've changed much on the back half of the season because of injuries and underdeveloped talent. Which circles back to my original claim that the likely culprits of our poor production are our sub-par position coaches.

Shoop is fine IMO but the coaching of the DBs has been horrific since Botch got here. That points at one of Martinez, thigpen, and Strip or maybe all three

Ultimately Shoop is in charge of the D and has to either make corrections to how we are coaching the DBs or show these guys the door

I've been disappointed. Why in the hell were we not helping our corners during the vandy game? Shoop loves to play one and zero despite our corners sucking arse. We have also looked unprepared on defense going into every game. No turnovers and Barnett is the only one getting negative plays.

Still his resume and injuries gives him the benefit of the doubt. It is possible or even likely that our position coaches are terrible and the main problem.

I think Butch will be allowing Shoop to bring in his guys this off season at which point I think it's more than fair to judge him on the product on the field next year.

I hope so. This past month has been some of the worst defense I have ever seen. It is was worse than 2012 which I didn't think was possible.

Empirical data would show that he is a good DC. I just don't understand how our DBs are still so bad and have terrible technique, especially when he was supposed to be personally working with them in the offseason.

Injuries are a huge part of the bad defense for sure, but it seemed to me that players werent in position to make plays and seemed to be confused as to what they were supposed to be doing which led to a lot of explosive plays.

Our LB play has been fricking awful. Bad news is that it will probably be worse next season.

All things considered I hope he stays.
