Maple Hall bowling alley in downtown is gearing up for their grand opening in the near future. Here's a few of their most recent pictures (I'm really digging the brick and arched doorways through out the place). Love seeing spots like this pop up downtown

Our custom concrete bartop from Paulk & Co is installed. Beer lines going in this week. So close we can almost taste it!

I'm beyond pumped over this opening up downtown. I can drink the shite out of some craft beer and bowl all night

Schulz Brau Grand Opening Video

Here's a aerial/drone video of Knoxville's newest brewery, Schulz Brau Brewing, set to open on June 10th. The whole place from the Castle to the bier garten looks incredible. They did a great job IMO.

The Bearden Beer Market was just recently named one of the Best 50 Beer Gardens in the country in a new list that just came out. Love hearing that as it's one of my favorite places in the city.

Some random information from a poster on VQ pertaining to all of the construction/development on campus.

quote:

Based on what I've read in the Master Plan, there are plans to add more green space through campus in terms of how nice it is and how much there is to do around it. My understanding is that there will eventually be a pedestrian corridor directly through the heart of campus which will include green space. Additionally, some roads, including Volunteer Blvd., are going to be redesigned to be more pedestrian and bicycle friendly.

UT bought the old cement factory on Neyland and is redeveloping it into their Facilities Management complex. That is going to improve the view on Neyland and free up space formerly used for Facilities Management to be redeveloped for other uses.

Essentially all on campus student housing is going to be brand new writhin a few years. There will be new science and engineering buildings all over the place. Some might say that there'll be new buildings all over campus just in time for Haslams maintenance company to subcontract out facilities services for the UT campus - but that is another discussion.

The Student Union is going to be a great asset for the students. The new student health center is a huge upgrade.

The athletic training and academic support facilities are first class state-of-the-art. The new athletic dorm will be a fantastic addition once it is finally complete.

The new parking garage at Gibbs Hall and on Lake Avenue will add approximately 2,000 additional parking spots on campus.

The Cumberland Avenue redevelopment is going to be a huge upgrade. I still have questions about parking but I trust that the city is going to work that out. There will much more residential spaces on and adjacent to Cumberland with street level retail, restaurant and entertainment space. The areas adjacent to Cumberland and campus are being upgraded through off-campus housing and condos.

I agree that campus beautification and green space needs to be an ongoing focus. But let's give them credit for the huge strides they are making in a short period of time.

Now the next focus needs to be on getting Neyland Stadium back to the standard it deserves.

I think within the next 3 years people are really going to start changing their opinion regarding UT's campus. All of the construction every where (Particularly the strip) is painful, but it's going to look great when they get done. Roughly 1 more year and a few weeks until the Cumberland Ave project is scheduled to finish.

Another new development, Regas Square, is officially getting ready to break ground in downtown in the form of a 6 story mixed use building on the corner of Gay St and Depot Ave right across from the Southern Railway Station (A few blocks from Crafty Bastard brewery & The Old City). The first floor will offer shopping and restaurants to patrons while the top 5 floors will accommodate over 100 new Condos. This will be the 2nd large housing development to hit downtown within the last 1-2 years to go along with the Marble Alley Lofts. Really great news IMO

TRUE:

I no longer live in Knoxville but need an update on the local beer scene. Which of the new brew houses is worth a shite?

My top 3 in order:

Crafty Bastard
Schulz Brau
Alliance

All 3 are killing it right now. I'm a die hard Crafty Bastard guy, but Schulz Brau and Alliance are really solid as well.

Schulz Brau and Crafty are probably 2 miles from each other on the fringe of the Northern part of downtown. (You can most definitely hit both in a single drinking session) Alliance is just across the river/Gay St. bridge and then hang a left and you'll see it in the right hand side.

Not crazy on Alliances environment just yet, but the beer is really good.

many thanks.

I will be back that way for at least one weekend this year and was curious. I did go by Crafty Bastard when it opened but none of their beer was tapped yet. I have heard good things about Schulz Brau and have also heard good things about Balter...at least their food.

I will try to get to as many as possible.

No worries man. Balter is definitely another really good option. It's more like something that you would see in Asheville in terms of the food (really good) and beer . It's got a really nice layout with a view inside of their brews house.

Fish Tacos, Sliders, Shrimp and Grits (My goto) etc.. A lot of dank arse homemade appetizers too.

Last Days of Autumn is another fairly new Brewery maybe 2-3 miles the other direction from Crafty Bastard. They've got a pretty good following and make some good beer. It's over by Saw Works brewing ( less than 1 mile north east of the Old city)

Factoring in both drinkability of the beer being produced and the atmosohere each establishment has -- I'd probably rank the breweries in Knoxville like: (Ranking only breweries with taprooms that are open as of 8/31/16)

-Crafty Bastard (Beer is excellent)
-Balter (Beer is good to OK but the vibe/location/food is very good)
-Schulz Brau (Traditional German Brewery)
-Alliance (Beer is excellent, atmosphere has just been ok for me)
-Last Days of Autumn (Good beer, setup is so so)
-Downtown Grill Brewery (Awesome 2 story interior and the best location out of any brewery in the city, but the beer is only ok to fair imo. Food is good)
-Black Horse
-Saw Works
-Smoky Mountain Brewery

Fanatic, Geezer, and Cold Fusion Breweries are producing beer, some much more than others (Fanatic) but do not have a taproom that's open just yet.

2 more breweries are in the works as well. Another one downtown is going on Gay St. on the other side opposite of Downtown Grill and Brewery and then another another one will go about 1 block from Schulz Brau and Bar Marley.

Once they are all built, the North Downtown area will have: Crafty Bastard, Schulz Brau, (New brewery coming), Geezer, Saw Works, Last Days of Autumn and Balter all within like 3-4 miles of each other.

New Beer joint coming to the Old City -- Knoxville will be the 4th Pour Taproom to open up behind their spots in Asheville, NC Greeneville,SC and Santa Cruz, CA.

A self serve beer joint with over 60+ craft beer, wine, and cider selections to choose from. You can pour as little or as much as you want as you are charged per oz. instead of per pint. Making it easy to try as many of the offerings as possible. Apparently you get a bracelet that the host preloads your card information on and then you are able to swipe the bracelet prior to filling up and then are charged accordingly. After so many beers your bracelet will stop working until you see a host or server and they give you the thumbs up that you're still good to continue drinking.

It's coming, but yeah. Everything past Walmart heading towards downtown is still a mess. The finish date is supposed to be around the time thatcher football season kicks off.

So I'm about to make my biennial pilgrimage back home to Knoxville at the end of April and I was looking into some of the newer food/beverage places mentioned here. It looks like Pour Taproom is facing some new legislation that would ban self-serve beer in Knoxville.

LINK

Does anyone have additional information on this proposed legislation?

Also, is there any word that any reincarnation of Regas restaurant could be coming back in the new construction on Regas Square? I worked at Regas as a server and bartender in the mid-2000s and was sad, but not surprised to see it close down. Definitely miss the food there.
